You can use it as a bargaining chip when reenlisting. Tell them that the only way you'll reenlist is if they let you go back and learn another language.

Also, if your language's mission suddenly becomes a lot less important than it once was they may retrain you in another language. I knew several Serbian linguists at DLI when I was there who were retraining because the Navy didn't need as many Serbian linguists as it once did. If the Middle East and North Korea straighten up their act then you might see Arabic, Farsi, and Korean linguists getting retrained. You never know.

In your first enlistment, however, it is unlikely that you'll be sent back to DLI to learn another language.

Learning two languages over the course of a career is relatively common. What was once today's hot language may become dead weight, and so many linguists are sent back to retrain. Given the retention climate in the Navy and PTS, we might actually see surplus linguists downsized in the future rather than spending money to retrain them. Then the Navy will scramble because there is a world crisis and all those particular linguists are gone...believe me, its happened REPEATEDLY.

OP -- I would expect to learn a major language (Korean, Arabic, Farsi, Chinese, Russian) and to maybe get the chance to learn a 'low density' language..Indonesian, Burmese, etc. I would not count on getting TWO major languages however unless you were FORCED to retrain.
