About to repoer for CTI school in 3 month and trying to get more info on the area.
This is my first move to CA, what should I be concerned about?
Do I have to register vehicle in the state of CA?
How long does check in process takes?
School uniforms?
Duty?
Can I check in early for house hunting leave?
Is there a NEX or commisary on base?
Please post what ever else you can think of to make move easier.

CA is anal about registering cars, so yeah.
small NEX on NPS, Commissary is at OMC/old Ft Ord..which has a slightly larger AAFES. Gas pumps on both. Navy Fed on NPS.

If you are married, your only MFH option is OMC. If not, Barracks on POM. If married, expect to be offered one of the older buildings first, you will have to push for a newer one, most likely. Its PPV, and my own personal experience was less than fun, but for you, it may be a better deal, depending on how large the family is and your BAH. If you want to live out in town, stay AWAY from Salinas.. more gangs than LA. Sand City, Pacific Grove and Seaside are nice. so is Del rey Oaks.

Lots to see an do in the area, indoors and out. I HIGHLY recommend joining Taste of Monterey if you like wine.

Can't answer any of the official type questions, Johnny_B was at NPS, not DLI.

doubtful. GEO Bats are frowned upon mightily. if the barracks are full, you will be living in town. might want to consider rooming with several others. because you will get ONE BAH meant to cover 2 households. and good as it is Monterey BAH is not designed to do that.

Any particular reason why your spouse is looking to be voluntarily separated for at least a year and possibly longer? you will NOT be entitled to FSH during this time. I mean it would make sense if they are finishing up college themselves, but not so much if they don't want to move away from family.

you may get to choose from ever is being started up the week you show up. you will be taking ONE language at a time, you will not get permission to do any additional studying outside of DLI on your own time.
