Can someone give me the process in which you become an IS. Like after boot camp where do you go and so forth? Also I was wondering if it was true that if you score in the top 10% of the class in A school you will get to go where you want? Can you be stationed stateside as an IS because I really want to be at the naval base in San Diego. Is this a possibility or no?

My husband is an IS and the way it worked for him is after boot camp he went to A school in Dam Neck Virginia. After that he was on hold for awhile waiting for his clearance. Once he received orders he went to C school (which C school you go to depends on your orders so that's why he had to wait) also in Dam Neck. We are stateside right now. He is stationed in Arlington VA. He graduated at the top of his class for both A and C school. Most of the time it is true that if you do well in school you will get orders you like but you always have to consider the needs of the Navy, because that is where you will be placed. Good luck!

Rachelfee is right, I left bootcamp and went to dam Neck the same day as my graduation. A school started for me a week after I got there, First phase they will ask you what are you dream orders. Think Carefully this will likely decide where you end up. Second phase you could end up on Security hold as this is where you need your clearance, if you are on hold you will change classes, and fall in to the next class that is open. while I was there, we had a guy that was on hold when I got there and still on hold when I left. It can be time consuming to get a clearance. We never heard anything about Choice orders for top ten% of the class. As a matter of fact all we ever heard was who passed each class and who failed each class... Be careful with your dream orders, I put east coast down and I was on an Amphib that was never on the east coast, but whose home port was VA.

When i graduated A school 2 months ago or so they let you pick your orders. We never filled out a dream sheet but we did get to pick according to the order of our class excluding fleet returnees and reservists. I picked 3rd in my class and got opintel to Italy. So dont be too scared. lol There were also orders to San Diego and various other places. It just depends on the NEC that is available at the time and when you graduate.

Yeah, when I was in, I filled out dream sheets and that was just what they were, dream sheets. It gives your detailer an idea of what you are interested in, not what you will get. Case in point, during my last two weeks in A school I had ordes to a carrier, but then two days before I was to graduate, I got orders to a shore station, NAS Oceana, VA Beach VA. Never regretted it either. Wink
