Can anyone tell where can I find the insturctions regarding FLPP? I just recent noticed there are Cantonese Chinese and Amoy Chinese DLPT, but I couldn't find anything about the pay scale or categories for those 2 languages.

Thanks in advance.

Unless the rules have changed, you are not entitled to FLPP unless you are serving in a billet requiring you to use the language...so unless you are assigned in a billet requiring you to use those, you won't see any money.

I guess they used to do it differently, but right now if you're a CTI you can get paid for any language that you can pass a DLPT in up to $1000 per month. A 2/2 gets $200 a month, 2/3 and 3/2 is $300, and 3/3 is $400. I'm not sure how the pluses work. Like if you get a 2+/2 I don't know how much you'll get. 2+/2+ would definitely be $250 though.

I'm not sure how it works if you aren't a CTI though. I think you can only get paid for languages that are needed by the Navy or else all the Spanish speakers would be getting language pay and I'm pretty sure that's not the case. There was a Korean guy I went to boot camp with though who took the DLPT there and they started giving him language pay for it, so I guess if you aren't a CTI it depends on the language.

I took the Mandarin Chinese DLPT when I was in bootcamp and had a 3/3 on it, and I was getting 400 a month. But my second year in the Navy I didn't do so hot I scored a 3/2+ and I got 350 a month, since then I never scored over 2+ on reading.

I'm just trying to find out if you get anything for Cantonese and Amoy as a non-CT, if not I'm not even going to bother taking the test.

P.S. I just read OPNAVINST 7220.7F, but it doesn't tell you which language falls into what category, I guess I have to look harder.

Things have clearly changed. In my day, it was $0 for a 2/2...we were told "why should we pay you for meeting minimum standards?"

If you're authorized FLPP for one language, then it would stand to reason that you are entitled to the maximum amount of FLPP ($1000). Besides, with the quantity of port calls made in Hong Kong, I would hope that you would want to take the test in Cantonese, if for no other reason than to have it on record (and for a possible bullet point).

I just got back from sea there's a nice chunk of change sitting in the bank waiting for me. I guess the Navy does pay you for those 2 languages, even as a non-CTs.

Port calls? What is that? Eek

Grats. FLPP is a great thing. It's especially great if they have a DLPT for several languages closely related to 1 that you know. You just study a bit and you can get paid for more than 1 language. I don't know if those 2 Chineses are pretty closely related, but for Arabic you've got MSA (modern standard Arabic), Iraqi, Levantine, and Egyptian. There are DLPTs in all of those so if you know 1 and study the others for a bit it isn't incredibly difficult to max out at the $1000 a month. For Farsi you've got Dari which is practically the same thing from what Farsi linguists tell me. Just be glad that you're not in the Army. I'm pretty sure they don't pay their people for any language that they aren't using in their job. I know Arabic linguists who have passed the dialect DLPTs but still just get paid for MSA while the Navy and Air Force linguists are getting paid for every DLPT they pass.

That's a retarded thing to do - because should you be called upon to use that language, and you aren't performing, then you can kiss it all goodbye.
