Hi,

I am a Boatswain's Mate with 2 years onboard a ship. I have been rated for a year now. I am trying to find a less physically demanding job because of medical reasons. Having in consideration that my first language is spanish I want to cross rate to the CTI rating... the problem now is how?!

Can anybody give me some pointers?!

get aproval to take the DLAB. if you score well enough you may be given the opportunity to Cross rate depending on good a BM you have been and how much your CoC likes you and whether you cna meet the necessary Clearance qulfications. BTW: Spanish will be of little to no use.

Just curious, when you say it depends on how good of a BM (s)he's been, does that mean a good BM would be able to transfer (because of his/her hard work and effort) or unable to transfer (because the Navy doesn't want to lose a good BM)?

depending on their chain of command,.either scenario could be true.

they will be less likely to approve a dirtbag/substeallar Sailor of any rating.

although in the case of one of DH;s VERY good froends: washed out of Nuke school, became an FC. took his C school, went t othe Fleet and was.. an okay.. FC. BUT his attitiude and willingness to do other stuff was instrumental in getting his request chit to cross rate to MA approved, where he found his niche and is doing splendidly for himself.

Also helped Stepson get a better pick of new ratings when he became PDQd from Aircrew as opposed to being told what he was going to be...

First off (if this applies), CTI does not accept E-5 or above for conversion for Zone A sailors. They do let in E-5 only for Zone B.

Secondly, you need at least 2 years time-in-rate to be able to cross rate. I have heard from some CC's that they can waive some of that time, but I have yet to actually see it happen.

If you got that far start with either getting your DLAB taken (and entered in Fleet Ride) you need a 100 or better to be accepted. Or you can start working on you clearance package. The Career Counselors will pretty much tell you to get that stuff first, then come see them.
