Hello,

I was thinking of trying to join the Navy as a CTI, but I really want to be posted over seas, preferablly Japan. I know that thats not exactly how it works, well at all really, but I was just wondering if CTIs get postings over seas? If so what would be my best bet in getting one to the Far East, Chinese?

Thanks,

If you are looking to do an Asian language, yes, it is possible to get stationed in either Korea or Japan. That said, your chances of getting either as an initial assignment are slim...you would probably need to re-enlist to do so as a second tour. Korea is possible as a second tour if you are a Korean linguist...may be some Chinese billets there now, I don't know. If you want to be stationed in Japan, you need to be qualified for Air Crew. If you are medically DQ'd from flight billets, Japan probably is not in the cards for you....ever. The billets that do exist that aren't flight related are generally reserved for very senior enlisted...a rank you may not achieve, even if you do 20 years. If I were you, I would expect to spend my 3-year first tour of duty in Hawaii. Its not like it was in the 1980s....most of the overseas billets have dried up and blown away. Doesn't mean you can't go TAD overseas, but actually getting an overseas billet these days takes a good deal of luck.
