I have been out of the Navy since 1993 and I was 20 years old when I got out. I only did 3 years active on the USS Eisenhower CVN69. I then did 6 years with the Army reserve as a MP from 1998 -2002. I am now a with DHS.
My question is I am planning on doing the IS job out of South Com. I was told by my recruiter that the A school I will attend will be in Jacksonville Florida. He told me that I will only have to do 7 weekends to complete the A school. 1) What kind of training will I get in only 14 days? 2) How fast and will I get deployed? 3) I was a E-3 when I left the Navy but coming back in as a E-5 4) What the heck is C school and will I have to attend that school before being deployed? 5) What is NEC? And will I need this school to be deployed? 6) I feel I am going to be lost due to the fact all I remember is the Army and being a MP 7) When I go down to MEPS for the third time in my life will I then choose Intelligence Specialist or Crtptologic Technician? I thought IS was all the same thing? 8) Help me out guys please! I am a little worried if I should even be going back in but I miss the reserves. I hate the Army and that is out of the question. |

Virginia Beach, or AKA Dam Neck 1) What kind of training will I get in only 14 days? IS "A" school is 13 weeks 2) How fast and will I get deployed? Immediately if you fail IS "A" school 3) I was a E-3 when I left the Navy but coming back in as a E-5 Sounds like your going in under the Direct Procurement Enlistment Program (DPEP). 4) What the heck is C school and will I have to attend that school before being deployed? Whatever the Navy needs you for. Look in the NEC manual to see some of the choices. 5) What is NEC? And will I need this school to be deployed? NEC = Naval Enlisted Code...It is the type of skills you have learned.... Go here to download the manual http://www.npc.navy.mil/Enlisted/PRSB/NECInformation 6) I feel I am going to be lost due to the fact all I remember is the Army and being a MP Now you have to worry about dropping the soap in the shower... 7) When I go down to MEPS for the third time in my life will I then choose Intelligence Specialist or Crtptologic Technician? I thought IS was all the same thing? They are totally different. The only thing that is the same is that you need a SBI access 8) Help me out guys please! I am a little worried if I should even be going back in but I miss the reserves. I hate the Army and that is out of the question.
|
To Add to 93Corvette's responses: 1. For Prior Service, the Navy Reserve offers Sailors the chance to complete IS "A" Res, which is the equivalent of IS "A" School (in Dam Neck, VA). IS "A" Res is conducted on approx. 7 drill weekends (JAX, ATL, and other sites around the US) and completed with a 2-week AT at the Navy & Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center (NMITC) in Dam Neck, VA. 2. Deployment/Mobilization It varies. Many Reserve IS's have already deployed and they will likely continue to support operations in OEF/OIF. This would become most likely after completing "C" School. 4-5. "C" Schools are advanced training and you receive an Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) upon completion; it is similar to the Army's skill identifiers that they add to MOS's. The unit your are assigned to, combined with the needs of the Navy, will dictate which "C" School you attend. "C" Schools are held at NMITC -- do a search on this forum for the specific NEC's available -- I've already posted the information in the past. The only exception to going to NMITC, is some intel training sites conduct Operational Intel (NEC 3924) training on drill weekends. Good luck! r/ ISC |

If I read this correctly you are going in as an IS in the Reserves. What he is talking about is not A school. It use to be called NBIT but they changed the name a little while ago and now if you join NPS you go to the full boot camp and full A school. The new school is every drill weekend, and you will go over the basics of Intel, this is local to your NIRR. You will then do your 2 weeks at Dam Neck, learning more Intel stuff.
In today's Reserves you need to plan on being deployed. I would bet that you will be near the top of the MOB list in your area considering the rank you will be coming in with. I am not sure on this, but I don't think you have to have completed C school to be deployed. |
