I tried posting this with a few other questions, but the forum sorta got hijacked, lol, so I will post this question separately. Are there any vegetarians at DLI, and if you are, what do you eat? I am a vegetarian, myself, and it may seem funny, but it is VERY important to me to be able to have a complete diet. People keep saying "there's a salad bar," and "There's a lot of veggies every day." If you are a vegetarian then you know we are not rabbits and don't JUST eat greens! So I ask, could a vegetarian please post on this thread and tell me what you have found to eat (or if you know one, ask them to post, or please post for them what they eat). This seems to be the hardest question to have answered, lol! Please help!!
I cannot answer your core question, but I would say if things are like they were 15 years ago, you are going to find it a tough road to hoe being a veggie in the Military, especially if you go aboard ships. While shore based messes will have a greater assortment of choices, meat in its various forms is part of every meal. I am thinking if you are looking for non-rabbit food, such as soy products, you are likely to be hungry quite a bit.
Even on a carrier like I was on, meal choices are not overly varied. If at midrats you wanted something other than a slider, then you were eating fries. The only other item that was available as I recall was cereal. At other meals you could pick regular veggies and salad, but we are talking base salad, nothing fancy.
I will bow to the greater knowledge of currently deployed folks, but I think being a veterinarian is going to be tough. Sorry to sound so negative.
MANY years ago (I won't say how many!) DLI had a sort of "to-go" snack bar around back behind the chow hall closest to 629 where you could get pre-packaged salads for lunch. Back then you could get two salads, so I usually got one for lunch and saved the other for dinner. I also seem to recall that for a while at least, you could get vegetarian burgers at DLI.
You will probably find other vegetarians at DLI and at the fleet. My old CO (who is now a 2-Star) was a vegan, so you will not be alone. You may have to get creative, but it is doable. You might try posting to a more general forum though, to get more info.
Is that snack bar still there? It was actually pretty good.
I got a SERIOUS case of food poisoning from the DLI chow hall and would up in the hospital with a couple other folks...but thats another story
The to-go place is still there. People call it the "kiosk" now. I used to go there for breakfast every morning, but I've only been once or twice for lunch or dinner, so I'm not sure what they have by way of vegetarian stuff.
Well guys, she did it! (I am the husband) Got a 135 on the DLAB and deploys 02June08 for basic! Keep your fingers crossed for Arabic...and good food, lol. Thanks for all the help on here, gonna try to not be a stranger around here.
That depends on whether you choose to eat cheese/egg. Vegans have a real tough time eating the chow-hall food, but there are vegetarian options provided, usually in the form of casseroles that always include cheese. Many of the vegetarians I know go off-post to buy their food. We have a Trader Joe's in walking distance and a Whole Foods market a short cab ride away. This command is an accompanied tour, so provided you don't get put into Spanish (you probably won't) then you can have your spouse live here, and you'll get a sustainence allowance to eat whatever you want. Hope this helps.

Good luck, I think you'll need it.
Oh, come on now. Don't forget the endless supply of peanut butter and jelly!
I did forget PB & J. We did have one guy though, that had a diet that consisted almost entirely of gedunk, soda/coffee and cigarettes. Was skinny as a bean pole and "wired". Now come to think of it, that might be considered at least vegetarian if not vegan.
