I am an E-5, cross rating to IT, and will be going to IT "A" school in a few months. Does anyone know what I should expect, as far as the base, the location, the cirriculum. Is there any literature or maybe nko courses I can do that will help me before I go to school. Any info would be greatly appreciated..
Hey I was in Pensacola for CTR A school. As far as the base goes Corry really has nothing to offer. It's pretty run down but since you are an E5 you will either live in the nicer BEQ or in Hotels off base. The Penascola Area is alright if you are in to beaches there are a bunch of good ones. NAS is WAY nicer than Corry but still. As for the curriculum, From what all my IT buddies told m it was pretty easy as long as you have a basic knowledge of computers and networks. Hope that helped at all? CTR3 Wilson, NIOC Misawa, JP
IT "A" previously split its program half on networking/computer stuff and the other on communications. The networking used to be older crap not being used in the fleet but I hear they are finally updating the curriculum. As for comms, it is the basics for how we communicate, gear, theory, and message traffic.
We have a brand new ITSR reporting next week. I'll ask him how the school was and update this thread.
just make sure you don;t fall behind study like no other. also make sure that you are in shape when you get here cause alot of fleet returnees have a hard trouble with the pt here. but other then that just study hard
I checked with our new ITSR. He said the school is still broken into two halves. First part is networking and the second RF (Comms). He said the networking is NT based which is a waste considering we don't even use that in the fleet.
Since you aren't worried about finishing high to get an auto promotion to E-4, I would concentrate on the areas that you aren't as familiar with. And enjoy your time in FL. The Comms (gear) will be different out of school, but the theory stays the same.
I am a ITSR currently in IT "A" school. IT "A" school is 13 weeks long. Class is eight hours (minus lunch and breaks) long. We have an Alpha (day) and Bravo (night) shift here so you may have class at night. I don't know anything about the schooling yet because I am still in holding due to there not being enough IT's to make a class yet. However from what I have heard the IT "A" school is more basic then most people expect. You will have a multiple choice test once a week. Most of the homework is done in class from what I have heard.
You will be at Corry CID (Center for Information Dominance) station. The entire base is reserved for just the IT and CT rating. There are not many IT's here. About 70% of the students are CT's. You will need at least a secret level clearance before you can go to class. If you don't have one you will be waiting in holding until you get one. The E1 - E4's here are required to PT three times a week. I don't know how it works with the second and first classes being that there are not many second and first class students here that I have seen.
The "A" school is in Pensacola, FL. Pensacola is a medium sized city with an enormous amount of military bases in the area. Pensacola is a very military friendly city. CID Corry station has students from the Navy, Marines, Army, Air Force and Coast Guard. So you will see a lot of people from different branches here. Its about 95 - 100 degrees and 70%+ humidity here on an average day. We are in black temperature flag status all day. We even have been in black temperature flag status at midnight here. So you would be smart to bring some cool clothes.
Other then that its fairly laid back here. Being that you are a second class you probably wont have room and uniform inspections like we do so you can just work on class work then go chill for the rest of the day.
