I am considering applying for the DCO program in Intel. I have been told by the Navy that I am a good candidate. I have also been told that mobilization to Afghanistan some time after my second year is highly probable. This would devastate my wife and I cannot do that to her. I still want to serve my country, though.
I was told by recruiting that there are very few, if any, IW DCO slots this year (which also seemed like a suitable career path for me). I would appreciate any suggestions or sanity-check from the Intel or IW professionals out there. I do not take this decision lightly and want to do right by my family and my country. Many thanks in advance. |

bottom line: if you are unwilling to deploy, then don't join.
DH is an IWO and is currently IA on an eight month deployment to parts Dry and sandy. IWOs and INTEL..AD and Reserves alike are doing a LOT of IA/GSA orders and will continue to do so for many years to come. DH volunteered. at least half of the Wardroom has been voluntold. you do not really have a choice in the matter as it is pretty much being wrtten into your career path that you WILL go on at least one. you must ask yourself a very hard question..AND be TOTALLY honest with the answer.. if you were to NOT join just because of your wife's fears/demands/whatever.. will you resent her for it? in a year, five years, ten years? is he willing to discuss the possibility? is she willing to support you if you decide to go for it? yes it is hard. not gonna lie and say its a cake walk. even with me having literally daily communication with mine it's been tough. he's not getting shot at. Heck he is authorized 3 beers a day there believe it or not... There can be no freedom without sacrifice |

Like Mrsjvb said don't join if you don't plan on deploying. Once you finish your training, get your 9600, you are able to be MOBed. That being said you may not, for a while. It depends on what the Navy needs and where you fall in the order. I've known people who joined and left shortly after making LTJG at the 2 year mark and I know others who are LT's with 5+ in and haven't. You will not know, but you need to have it in the plan because unless things really change you will MOB during your time in.
And as for your wife, well you need to talk with here and discuss it. I know it would have been really hard on my family with out my wife and kids support. And I am glad that I got there support and applied. |

I'm considering going the same route. I'm also very reluctant to deploy again. I did two tours in Iraq in the Army as a linguist/signals intelligence analyst, totaling 27 months. That was quite enough for me, for a while.
That said, one short tour (six to eight months) would not be that bad, by comparison. Any idea if they take prior deployments into consideration when determining who to deploy? The Army certainly doesn't, which is why I'm not looking for a commission in the Army National Guard or Reserves. |

LOL then I can guess which country he's in, which countries he's NOT in. A deployment with a drink limit?? Might not be so bad |

Well, good luck. The waiting part is much harder than being over there, in most cases.

Something else to think about is our dwell time. They are trying to keep you home on a 1:5 ratio, so 1 year over would be 5 years not being sent. I only bring this up because of my NG and Army Reserve friends who seem to go every 2 years back over. Of course anything can change.
