I just got out of boot camp and I'm going to be headed down to CTN "A" School at Corry Station.
Wondering what school's like, if I need to be doing studying outside of it, I may have a week of hold to get some down, and if I can just go in there, bust my ***, pay attention, and get it down.
Any information on it would be great.

Subnetting is probably the hardest concept in A school. The detailer sent this link to me when I converted to CTN.
I'm in A school right now, so if you are about to class up, see you soon.

Hold up. Are you getting both CTN "A" school and BDNA? The cross raters we have been getting in have only been getting BDNA...

My husband just got approved to cross rate into CTN, he got both "A" School and "C" school(bdna). He goes in Aug08.
Ive been told that the school is pretty easy if you already know how to subnet, ect. The site elt2 listed is the site me and my husband both learned it from.
But im hearing alot of differnt storys about how long the school is. His detailer said A school was going to be 4 weeks long. Then "C" School was 4 months long. i had talkd to my friend who said it only lasted 2 months(or less) i cant remember exactly ill ask him again... his detailer also would not tell him where his "C" school was located, even though we already knew it was at corry field. was odd though. made me laugh, could find more info googleing than asking his detailer. lol
was just wondering if there was more than one C school's for CTN's. and how long they were =)

Also, is there any reason why he has to wait 2 weeks into A school to pick orders? i figured it was to make sure he was passing ect. but wasnt sure.

Here he is at the USS Alabama. Just putting miles on the Vette, and having a great time! Woo-hoo.... for having the Navy pay him to see the world... (He should have took the top off the car)

Just curious, but is there a huge difference between the CTN and IT rates? I know we share alot of the same "C" schools and such and the clearence issue isn't as big since the CTO/IT merger.

I am currently looking into the CTN rating, but so far I have about a year exp as an IT on a cruiser. If anyone sees any misinfo please correct me. I am by no means an expert, but as an IT looking at converting I hope some of my exp is useful to you.

Its seems like CTN is more focused on the Network Security/Network analysis/forensics portion. As ITs we're working with more radio/sat comms issues, ADP- more network administration issues (but security is always important) and message handling.
In a nutshell CTNs seem to be much more focused as network security experts, where as an IT would be working on message handling/keeping comms up/and network administration (reseting passwords, troubleshooting the network/adns. Also as usual "it depends". On what kind of billet you end up in.
An IT working on a shore message center vice a guy on a carrier strictly on ADP, vice someone on a smaller platform (cg/ddg/ffg) where they might have their hands in everything will have different day to day responsibilities/experiences.

Numbers nailed the difference between IT and CTN as close as you can get on a public board.

I just have a few questions about CNTs, like how is the sea/shore duty rotation and what CREO category is to make CTN2?
thanks

I don't pretend to know a lot about ITs but it seems like ITs can do similar jobs to CTNs but they also have many jobs that are not all that similar to CTN like radio work.

If I remember right, CTN A School is 24-26 days and CTN C School (BDNA) is 51 days. I just got back as a reservist from BDNA school and it was well worth the trip. I recommend using every bit of time they give you to study in class and outside of class. Our class started with 16 people and only 11 passed. Even though you pass all the tests and you fail the final, you still fail so do not let up on studying for the final. Hope this helps on your way to getting your NEC 9305.

One last thing...when I was there in June, they talked about the new pilot program they are starting that will merge BDNA, IDNA, and ADNA which will your time in Correy to six months but I do not know when they will start this as a full time thing.

You muster up for school at 7:15ish... You march down to your school which is almost all the way down the road lol... its really like a 20 min march... Your there until lunch, which is an hour and ends when you muster at 12:15 (unless theres an early lunch).... You march back to your school which ends at 4. You march back down to the barracks. and Unless you have Mando Or duty, You have the rest of the day to study. Mando is a mandantory "study" for 2 hours at 5:45 - 7:45... You go to that when(if) you fail a test. which is a 79 and under...(you have 24 hours to study and retake the test). You can attend Mando if you want, which would be called Vollo.(i recommend going to "vollo" every day if you can)it does help and your instructor is right there if you have any questions!
The information for A school isnt hard at all. It really isnt... The book is basically a direct print off from Wikipedia. and none of it is classified(in side the book). You can basically go grab "Networking for dummies" and thats basically the A school book lol. The A school just prepares you for BDNA. If you dont screw off and go party every weekend and actually try you will do fine.

And they haven't started the "pilot program" yet, but they are pulling people out of the A school to "test" it. a few people got pulled out of my husbands A school to test it in Aug.
