Anyone out there know if the GWOT medal is authorized for wear by those assigned to IS "A" School here at the NMITC? I am currently here & we been getting both answers (yes & no) from people here (those who been here know what thats like).
We know we need 30 consecutive days in a unit authorized to wear them. Some classes were told to put them on while some here were not told anything. Just wondering, thanks! |

If I remember right, the instruction on the GWOT service medal states that it requires, like you were told, 30 consecutive or 90 non-consecutive days at a command with a designated anti-terrorism support mission. In practice, this means the medal gets awarded to virtually everyone in the military, though the Air Force is the only service that I've seen give it to A-school students without prior service.
As late as November of last year, when I was still in A-school, I didn't see any Navy students (or Army or Marines, for that matter) without prior service wearing the GWOT, so take that how you will. |

The Navy 'awards website' makes it VERY plain as to where you MUST serve,in any role,to be able to be awarded the GWOTSM. You will notice that NO place INCONUS is listed. APPROVED AREAS OF ELIGIBILITY BoatsBM1 |

That's for the expeditionary medal. I assume we're talking about the regular service one here.

Thanks for the posts. We were confused with getting both stories here. From reading above, we must wait for our first duty station.
Thanks again, Jon |

The GWOT medal from my understanding can not be worn in A school, I was not allowed too several years ago and I doubt it has changed. Seriously though, does it matter, it is a freebie and all it means is you are on a ship or boat. Who cares. Sorry if this sounds negative but ribbons will begin to mean less as you progress in your career. It is neat and all but unless it helps in advancement, well you know.

Each ribbon means less?
Are you kidding me? Every time I get a new one, it costs me at least 40 bucks to get a replacement set!! LOL But seriously, they do mean a lot, and if they don't mean anything to you, you probably don't deserve them... AO1 |

All I am saying is the ones I do not earn individually don't mean as much as the ones that I have personally striven for. I think my one admirals letter means more than any of my ribbons and I got that chipping paint with deck dive during MMP! Hah! Maybe its a skimmer/bubblehead thing, but to most who I work with, its the same mentality.

Well, anytime that you think something you got doesn't mean anything to you, send it home to Mom, and see what she thinks.
