The advancement rates for IT are fine. I'm up for E-6 this Septemeber and I haven't hit my four year mark in the Navy yet. Everything will be fine.

Don't worry about it. Learn your rate and bust your butt to do the best you can.

Good Luck!

I don't believe he cross-rated into IT. If you read his whole page, it says he's "attached to NMCB 74 as a communications Technician". A "NMCB" is a Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (And the CB there is where Seabees get their name), so it seems likely to me that that would be a badge he earned in that billet.

Quick question - I am joining the navy sometime soon. I went to MEPS passed physical/medical and the ASVAB (Scored a 70, not bad) although I was denied because of my diploma (Tier 2 school) so I just have to wait for them to start accepting Tier 2 schools again or get 4 more college credits to get 15 total.

Anyway... my combined score to get into the IT rating was more than enough.

I got like 236 for it but my question is, the CREO listing shows E1-E4 is undermanned but I haven't heard of anyone recently joining the navy and being accepted to the IT rating.

Does anyone know if the rating is still very open or would I be forced to choose another path?

i was offered IT but ive also heard that noone gets offered that rate so you have to ask and hope they offer it to you. first and foremost you need to get yourself squared away so you can get in the navy

Once they start letting Tier 2's in, you may still not get IT. Certain ratings are barred completely from allowing tier 2's in, you may want to work on those credits.

Thanks for the info. I am currently enrolling into college as we speak, trying to get some fast track courses.

I am definitely going to do the college course, for multiple reasons but definitely for the not allowing Tier 2s for certain jobs.

By getting 15 credits my school would count as tier 1.

Anyway thank you again.

Several of the recruits at my station, including myself, were initially offered the IT position with much earlier ship times than our other choices. We were under the impression that they're hurting for them. Oh well, guess that's the government for ya.

Hopefully i can get shipped out early in Sept. and not have to wait till Nov. I already passed my IFA so there is a good chance I can get shipped out earlier.

Advancement for IT is fairly quick. I think E6 would be your only hurdle, but that's not for awhile for you. What you learn as an IT in the Navy will definitely benefit you when/if you decide to get out.

Can I get an update on this?

Currently, are IT spots generally open or no? I want to get IT, but I'm trying to find out how hard it is to get in in terms of job availability. If it's not offered or there are no open spots, do I wait until its open? Or do I just take whatever and then wait until its open later? Is there a specific time of the year when I'll have a higher chance of getting IT? I'm thinking of enlisting spring or late winter of 2010.

According to what we're hearing, only open rates right now are SO and Nuke. Doesn't look like it will improve until Feb.

Anywhoo, comtinue this with your other thread in the joining forums.
