Hi all,

What exactly does it take to cross-rate to CTI?

I'm a native Mandarin Chinese speaker, scored 105 on DLAB, my current score on DLPT is 3/2+ (Used to be 3/3 but due to lack of practice my Chinese gets worse everyday), I have TS/SCI because of my current job, all of immediate family members are US citizen, I've been in the Navy for 2 years, qualified Submarine on my first patrol, and I'm sure I meet all the prerequisites to be a CTI.

But here's the problem: ETV is in creo group 1.

I've being fighting this battle for a long time. When I was in SUBSCOL, they wouldn't release me because "they need to send out bodies to the fleet", now I'm in the fleet, my detailer told me (actually my chief) he will not recommand to release me because NavET is in creo group 1, and he needs the bodies.

What should I do to make it happen? I'm just tired of hearing people telling me I can't do this because of the current manning of my rate, regardless what I am capable of, and getting paid from the Navy for doing absolutely nothing with the language. I understand manning is very important, but I'm sure they can find more people to replace me as a NavET than someone who is fluent in Chinese and also has the clearance. This part just doesn't make any sense to me.

So please help me. I am getting really frustrated with the Navy on this.

so why didn't you go for CTI coming in? Bottom line, if your CO won't sanction the request, it ain't happening. You have already been trained, why would they want to waste more time and money training someone else to do what you already do?

Hey! I'm not the only one who had this thought. I asked the same question in the sub forum (where he posted this as well)

I've talk to my CO during the patrol, and he supports me to cross-rate. But he is not aware of the situation I'm in with the detailer.

But thanks for the help, I'm giving it up at this point, after 2 years of trying is enough.

quote:

I took the "you can change rate in bootcamp" bait from my recruiter, because when I went to meps, they didn't have the seat open on the date I wanted to ship out. And that's the solution my recruiter gave me,but it didn't work in bootcamp, nor SUBSCOL.

I understand they spent all the time training me as a NavET, and I was trying to aviod that. I was never pulled out of the pipeline eventhough I have the CO's approval, and it took months just to get my special request chits back. The entire process back in SUBSCOL was paintful, I lost count of how many instructors told me "you will not make it because we need bodies on the water front".

But you're right, it doesn't matter what I think, or how hard I tried, it's not going to happen. I guess I'm just another body for the Navy, and the best I can do just keep collecting FLPP.

Thanks.
