I know how language pay works as far as active duty goes, but in the reserves how do they do it? I wouldn't think they would still let you max out at $1000 a month, but I don't know. I think I read somewhere about $500 being the max per month that you can get. I'm not sure about this though. Anyone have any info?
I don't know reserve-specific policies, but I'd be surprised if there were many billets in the reserves where language abilities were a requirement. Without that, there's no incentive pay.
True, I'm guessing there can't be too many, but I've heard of civilians (former military) who work where I work and just come into work in their uniform when it's time to drill. They basically just do the same thing they usually do but in uniform.
Sazquiz, its a lot more complicated than that. Unless they have overhauled the rules dramatically, you can't serve in the same office (or immediate section) as a reservist as you work in as a civilian. It could get kind of awkward if you are a GG-13 in your civilian job and office manager but only an E-5 in your reserve job (and lower in rank than the people you supervise as a civilian). I have seen it happen where CTI reservists had to get out of the reserves because there was no appropriate place for them to drill.
I guess that would be kind of strange. I hadn't thought about that. I don't know any CTIs that are in the reserves personally, but here in Georgia I think there are some. They might work in different areas depending on if they're in uniform or not.
I used to have some CTI reservists who worked for me....none of them worked in the same command as civilians. One of my office mates got out of the navy and joined the reserves while he was waiting for NSA to hire him; once he was hired, he actually had to leave (or cross-rate, and he chose to leave) as the only place he could drill was in the same office where he was an NSA civilian.
You have VERY limited places to go for your drill and your AT time every year as a CTI reservist...I was told that I was going to be spending all my time in trailer out at Hill ARB in Utah listening to language tapes until I was a 3/3. Bleah
Needless to say, I didn't join the reserves when I got out.
