I will be @ DLI in 08August. My husband will be moving as soon as I am able to find a place for us to live. It will have to be off-base, because we have snakes, which are not allowed on-base.
I have posted a question as to how hard it might be to find a studio (preferred) or an apartment/house where our animals will be allowed, with no results.
Now I ask again, with another question: Do we have to announce animals kept in aquariums? In Texas we don't have to. We did, because we didn't know, but we were never required to tell our leasing agent or pay any type of pet deposit, since the animals do not leave their habitat for anything other than vet visits.
If anyone is (or knows) a housing assistant, or has a relationship/friendship with a landlord, or has reptiles, will you please advise on how hard/easy it will be to live there. Within 20 miles of base would be best. Snakes don't poop/pee on the floor, they don't chew the carpet/moulding, they don't run loose, and they make no noise. Like having a fish, but without the water that can leak everywhere!
Please post any information you have, I want to be as prepared as possible when I leave, so my husband can be there with me as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance!

you are most likely going to have to deal with a Realtor once you get there. the PPV people may have some contacts for you. if you rent from an individual, they have every right to dictate what kind and number of pets allowed. so basically it will be on you to ask all the questions each time you find something that may work for you. keep in mind that is is expensive to live in Monterey and certain areas( SALINAS) you absolutely do NOT want to live in. More gangs than LA.

I could tell you what my tagline was, but then I'd have to shoot you.

Salinas isn't that dangerous, people!!! -- but the commute is HORRIBLE, especially since gas is now just shy of $4 a gallon here. And there's a surprising amount of traffic on the, well, only two roads that go between Salinas and the peninsula area.

I thought you could have aquarium pets in housing. Can't guarantee you can have them shipped if you end up in an Asian language (that means you go to Hawaii), tho.
If you can live somewhere that has easy access to the commissary, that'd be best. If not, try to live near one of the two Trader Joe's - not only do they sell organic, but their prices are generally cheaper than other places - often comparable to the commissary.

As far as anyone letting you actually have snakes, almost every place in the damn town says "NO PETS". Aquarium animals may not count, tho, and often what they don't know wont hurt them. I mean, honestly, aside from those who come to your house, whose going to know?
