I AM CURRENTLY AN AE3 AND I WANT TO CROSS RATE! I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AROUND RESEARCHING AND COMPARING THE IT,CTR,AND CTN RATINGS AND JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS FAR AS "A" SCHOOL DIFFICULTY, DUTY STATIONS, NECS, OR JUST OVERALL QUALITY OF LIFE AS A IT,CTR, OR CTN? PLEASE HELP ME I SUBMIT MY PACKAGE TO CROSS RATE IN JULY. O AND I HAVE LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF COMPUTERS HOW WOULD THAT AFFECT MY DECISION AND SCHOOL PERFORMANCE?
They will send you to schools to learn more about computers, but it would certainly help your transition if you had a good base of knowledge. There is also the Comm side within the IT field. On a big deck you may never even work with computers and networks. On a smaller ship you will get to do both over time.
CTN will definitely require computer experience to be successful. CTR not quite as much. All three of these will require a high clearance. That may be your biggest obstacle.
My clearance is not really a concern, my current duty station required another more detailed background check like a TS or whatever but without the benefits. As far as IT could I possibly do well in the computer side of the rate with only the basic computer skills I have, I mean will "A" school be difficult for me?
I would not worry about IT "A" school. Half of the school covers comms gear, antenna and circuits. The other half covers basic computing and parts. With the type of ITs coming to ships now I certainly wouldn't worry about it being too hard.
Wow I just noticed that you are a IT, thats great, how do u feel about the rate and do u have any suggestions for me? I will probrably be a 2nd class when I go to "A" school, what would be my role in the IT shop, or office or ISD or where ever they work, when i get to the fleet?
How do you figure you will be a 2nd class when you get there? Did you take AE2 in March and find out the result? I just found out I made IT1 on this exam.
Your role as an IT2 would be the subject matter expert, watch sup, training po or whatever your shop will need. I like the rate overall but it has also driven me nuts at times.
I'm currently wrapping up my sea time and getting ready for shore duty. I plan to work on my professional certifications on shore. I know of people getting their certs (including schools) through CCNA and CCNP paid by the Navy.
ITs are generally broken into two camps: Comms and Networking. It depends on the ship or command but try not to get pidgeon holed into one camp if possible. You can get schools on both sides and stay broad and more valuable overall. Get your warfare pin and qualifications as soon as possible. That will free you up to focus on your job.
Big decks divide ITs into separate workcenters and spaces so it is harder to crosstrain at times. Small boys work everyone together so it is much easier to learn all areas. They each have their pros/cons in general.
If you have any specific questions I'll try to answer them.
I also was an AE3 and I finished IT a schol in june... There was another AE3 in my last command that I graduated IT a school with. I actually scored pretty low on my first test but it was more so because i was not ready, i didnt know what to expect and i was unorganized. But after that the rest of my scores werebetter. let me know what you deided.. or if u need any help with IT stuff
How long is the IT "A" school ... i am planning to enlist (Green card holder) with MIS and Mathematics degrees, but would like to know what IT field anyone know does not require security clearance or if anyone know anything about the following classification, please advise as i would like to join the navy and be consider in one of the classification bellow:
- NEC IT-2780 Network Security Vulnerability Technician
- NEC IT-2735 Information Systems Administrator
- NEC IT-2779 Information System Security Manager
- NEC IT-2781 Advanced Network Analyst
- NEC CTM-9295 Network Systems Maintenance Technician
- NEC CT-9307 Network Analysis and Reporting
- NEC CT-9305 Basic Digital Network Analysis
Thank you in advance ... Just remember to mention if the classification require Security Clearance or not and what do you suggest in term of career path ... Again thanks ...
193, You posted NECs (Navy Enlisted Classification codes), these are a component of a rating. You first earn the rating before you can get any of these specialties. All the ratings (IT, CTM, CT) require a TS clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
