I agree that this isn't the best forum for this, but as I too am in the process of joining the dark side (ie becoming a US Gov Employee), let me briefly relate what I know.
A lot of the positions all over the world do not seem to be for specific job, it really seems to be more for hiring manages to solicit resumes. You can tell whether or not a specific job "exists" by looking at the job closing date; if the time between when the job vacancy is announced and the time the job closes is something short (ie a matter of weeks), then this is an actualy job they are looking to fill.
You can check on the status of your job application through USAJobs--it will only tell you whether you are being referred for further consideration though. I heard back about a week after the vacancy announcement closed, so I hope that gives you some idea.
I am looking to rejoin the military as a GS, and (fingers crossed) it looks like I will be doing so. I don't know anything about the hiring process for FBI intelligence analysts, but based on experience and conversations I have had with the FBI folks I work with, I would expect it to be a very slow process.
ONE FINAL NOTE: Make SURE when you separate from active duty that you get a copy of Member Copy 4 of you DD-214; I did not (and nobody bothered to tell me that the different copies of the DD-214 were in fact different documents), and you WILL need Member Coy 4 to apply for federal jobs. The Navy only gave me Member Copy One when I separated.
