I just got approved for Direct Conversion to CTN and am very excited. The current plan is to go straight to BDNA and I was wondering if anyone could tell me just what I will be missing out in A School. I know subnetting is a big thing, and I know subnetting inside and out. What else is covered there in preparation for BDNA (that isn't classified of course)?
I have a good deal of networking knowledge, I understand how packets get from computer to comuter via the layers of the OSI, I know the TCP/IP protocol suite pretty good. Im good with binary and hex math and conversions. Please let me know what you think. I believe there is still a window before my orders are cut to request A school.
Please reply here or private message me for my e-mail address.
Since you already know how to subnet and you know your conversions from octal, hex, decimal, and binary, I would suggest not going for A school since all A school is is learning subnetting. You sound like you pretty much have it all in hand. Good luck and welcome to the CTN community. I just got back from BDNA in June and can tell you to never let up from studying as I found out from some of the people that failed that passing all the tests but failing the final will still get you cut from the school.
I got my orders and I am going straight to C school in two months. I am studying Network+, pretty much have it down for the exam but I need to memorize the little things like 802 standards, command line switches, cable mediums/lengths/speeds/codes and stuff but otherwise it does not seem to bad. I am going to start studying for Security+, I'm not as familiar with that. Any other advice on what to study for now to prepare for C school and actually being a CTN (that you can pass in a public forum, of course). I hear packet analysis is good, do they mean learning the different packet structures (the different parts of the header and so on for protocols?)
Also, do they give exam vouchers in C school? I would prefer to get Network+ and Security+ out of the way, but I don't want to pony up the money since I know my actual command will pay for it once I get there.
You need to view this website...https://www.cool.navy.mil/ it shows you what exams the military will reimburse you for. The free exam vouchers are not retroactive though so make sure you contact them before you you take the exam. There are quite a few certs that CTNs are eligible for so definitely check it out
