Hi, Im currently close to graduating from BDNA (the second school you take with the current A school, C school program.)

1. The schooling (C-school) is a little difficult. It begins by overloading you with stuff you may have never seen before (Networking, Networking, Networking, basic Unix commands, network analysis and mapping from limited information, protocol analysic). The instructors do a reasonably good job at making this information digestible for people that have never seen it. If you have a computer networking background (and can subnet really well) it will be cake. After that, it is just a matter of keeping up. Lots of information that needs to be memorized for the frequent tests. If you have good study habits (using time in class wisely, studying at least a little bit each day, making flash cards, attending study groups, etc) it is very manageable. The trick is not to fall behind. If you fail a test it messes things up, because you won't be able to take the next test until you pass a retest, so you could find yourself studying for multiple tests at the same time. If you have the discipline to work hard and keep up, it is not bad.

I have to mention that by the time you get in, the schooling may have changed. Their is a pilot program in place being tested that changes the curriculum from A-school and BDNA (total of about 3-4 months), to a combination of BDNA, IDNA (intermediate network analysis) and I don't know what else, for a total of 6 months of training. I am sure the same will apply, keep up on the class, don't allow yourself to fall behind. Make an honest effort to study.

2. Pensacola is boring to me. Arrange to have a car if you can (have your parents drive it up or something).

3. I can't say if it is fun yet, as I am still in school. From what I've seen and inferred it is about 1,000 times better to me than my old rate (Engineman). But I am inclined towards computers and more geeky things.

I would love for you to explain this automatic E-4 stuff. Since when did they offer this?

Frankly, I think someone is bullsh*ting you because you are require to have TIR requirement for almost every rating, except for a very, very few going in under the DIRECT PROCUREMENT ENLISTMENT PROGRAM (DPEP). So, unless your a Hospital Corpsman (HM) with NEC HM-8496 Mortician, HM-8708 Dental Hygienist, Master-at-Arms (MA). Lastly Musician can also be automatically be promoted, under a seperate program.

So, I would love to see you back up your words with offical documentation. Frankly, I don't think you can...

Man, this is the blind leading the blind....

well you get the rank of e-4 when you finish both A and C school. unless you fail you wont get it. if you look up CTM you can see the description its like a paygrade advancement system. anyways dont get to excited if the recruiters are lying i wont be surprised not my fault i am being mislead.

Emery we should be in boot camp and go to corry station at the same time.

You might want to get that in writing.

Hey there Shipmate. I'm in DEP under a CTN contract myself, and also ship out the 20th of May. I suppose I'll see you in Basic and School then for the next year or so =)

Actually CTM is a six year enlistment as part of the Advanced Electronics Field it will entitle you to E4 automatically once you have completed the apporpriate Time In Rate as an E3.

William,
Did they change the requirement for CTM. Along time ago it was 6yo, then they switched it to 4yo. I didn't think they switched it back to 6yo.

But the bottomline, YOU DEPPERS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE TIME IN RATE (TIR) TO ADVANCE TO E4, which you deppers don't seem to realize. This is why I said "You better get it in writing", because you won't. If you come in as a E2 you have to wait 9month to become a E3, then another 6 months to become a E4 (which equals 15 months if coming in as a E2).

You new deppers, remember to listen to experience, by listening to another depper it's the blind leading the blind (ie you letting some unexperieced person telling you the Navy rules, which they truly don't know, which isn't a good thing...)

Sorry about that did not realize they changed CTM to a 4 YO program. They must have really reduced the length of training they recieved since their training used to be the longest of the Advanced programs.

The base I'm on had CTM's, which have since been deleted, but the new sailor came out of school and didn't even now the basic electronic principals (ie reading a resistor, or transister theory). I just couldn't beleive it.

When I went to CTM "A" school, we had to sign up for 6 years. I spent 2 years in "A" and "C" school before I even hit the fleet. Man, 2 years at Corry Station was awesome. Alot of the population there now has my DNA, and they even look like me... Cool

Vet,
I wonder if the change was due to the plans to phase out the rating? The last word I had was that CTM wasn't going away they may change it back to a 6yo program? Guess we will just have to wait and see.

I just cross rated to CTN, I passed up E5 3 times going on 4 to do this! Probably see you there. look me up on together you serve -

Merwin, Daniel

navy.togetherweserved.com/

If you want just reply here with your email and ill send invite. Should be there around April this year. been studying UNIX for the last 3 months.

Lastly only skimmed this post so sorry.
New bootcamps get "push button" to e4 or e5 in critical ratings. Me active conversion i have to go through score to get the same thing and a srb for staying navy and re-enlisting for 6 more years.

As a former "M" brancher, I was under the impression that "M" branch had gone away, merged with CTO into the CTN field......

I will say this, you won't be an automatic E-4 after Corry. Most "M" branchers got automatic E-3 out of boot camp, but not all did. Those who didn't had to do thier time as an E-2 and E-3 (which could be up to a year and a half out of boot camp) prior to putting on E-4.

As to Pensacola, it's boring if you don't have a car there - not that I think you'll have a lot of time to go out partying between class, studying, and watch duty.
