I was in the Air Force for 4 years. Honorable discharge (1J) eligible for re-enlistment. I have a background in IT since leaving the service 7 years ago. (Associates in Networking, NetworK+, MCP) I will not have a problem obtaining a clearance and my record is spotless. I am in the process of getting all my paperwork done to go back to MEPS and process. I am looking to get into IT with the Navy. Does anyone know how much in need the Navy is for CTN's? Are they accepting prior service in that rating? I know this is a new rating. Any info is much appreciated.

If you check some of the threads on the Joining the Navy forum you'll find prior service people end up doing a lot of the
legwork to enlist in the Navy. Expect it.
IT is an open rate but a lot of people who choose it don't like the radio (Transmit/Recieve/antennas) end of the rate.
As for your CTN question I have no knowlege.

Just to clarify - CTNs are not network/helpdesk/troubleshooting monkeys. We are analysts.

If you want to do classic IT work then become an IT. They are responsible for getting data from point A to point B, which can be a very difficult and challenging task depending on the environment.

With your background I don't think you would have a problem qualifying for the CTN rate, but don't come in hoping to be a router dude or cable monkey. We don't do infrastructure.

CTN1. Thanks for the reply. I was not under that impression that it was a helpdesk job. I work helpdesk at my current employer and that is not something I would want to do in the Navy. I did read some material about the rating and obviously you cannot tell me everything, but A school sounded a little interesting to me. How difficult is it for someone that comes in with a networking background?
