I have orders to the CGC Reliance in Portsmouth, NH. Any info on places to live? We are considering living in vicinity of Portland, ME. Any info on Portsmouth, Portland, ME or the surrounding areas would be greatly appreciated. We are looking for 2/3 bedroom single family homes (rentals), approximately $1,000.00-$1,300.00 a month.
I have a house for sale in Berwick, Me. It's about 20-25 minutes from the base. If you really want to rent though there is a nice two bedroom cape in our neighborhood currently for rent. I think it's going for about $1200??? The neighborhood is very quiet and private and it's an easy drive to base. The town is nice and has a very laid back feel. I am currently underway and do not know the name of the rental company. Berwick, North Berwick, and South Berwick are all very nice places to live. North Berwick is a little more out in the woods though and South Berwick is a little more expensive. Let me know if you need anymore info.
Thanks for the response, but I am looking to move a little closer to Portland. I am looking to send my daughter to a school in North Portland. The closer I get to Portland the easier it will be for my wife to drive her to school everyday.
I see your house is for sale, where are you transfering to? Any info on towns to live in closer to Portland would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I'm transferring to Sector San Fran. I don't really know much about the towns around Portland. I know Portland is about 45-60 minutes from the base in Kittery. I'm about 40-45 minutes from Portland and 20-25 minutes from Kittery. I'll put Berwick's school systems against any others in the state of Maine. I've lived a lot of places and the school that my kids attend is by far the best they've ever been to. I really tried to stay in the area but ended up on the west coast. Anyway, sorry I can't help more but one thing is for sure, if you live closer to the base and don't pay a lot in gas per month a mortgage is the way to go. Screw giving free money away every month. I don't know how other areas are but houses in my neighborhood are going $10-15,000 cheaper than they were last year because of the mortgage crisis and they'll start to climb again in the next year or two. Now is the time to buy if you have good credit. Well, I'll get off the soap box now. Good luck with everything.
I agree with now being the time to buy a house, especially in the Northeast, but I am hestiate to buy because currently I am attempting to sell a house here in the Cleveland area. I am not totally discounting buying in NE, but I will have to wait and see what happens with my current house. Although most likely I will be a landlord, hopefully to a Coastie, so if you know any Coasties moving to Cleveland send them my way.

While I was growing up in Portsmouth,NH, my neighbor use to go to Berwick Academy because his parents felt it was much better than the schools in Portsmouth. It just so happens, his dad was a retired USCG BMCS named Al Mead.
Don, I've heard some incredible things about Berwick Acadamy. The ratio of students that go on and graduate college is outstanding. My kids attend public school in Berwick and it's been great. We started out in Kittery but couldn't stand the privatized housing situation so decided to buy in Berwick. It's funny because I started talking to a cop that came to a domestic disturbance call at a Navy neighbor's house was an ex-Coastie and told me to get the hell out of there and buy a house in Berwick. May have been the best advice I ever got.
