Just wondering if anyone could comment about the privatized housing in Kittery, ME. We are on the list, but husband will be stationed in Portland. Are the ammenities of Portsmouth NSY and housing there worth his long commute to Portland? Thanks in advance.
When we were stationed in Portland, we lived in Scarborough, then moved to Cape Elizabeth. The rent was a little more, but I had 5 minute commute as opposed to the hour or more in bad weather.
I lived in Kittery housing for three months then paid to break my lease because I couldn't stand it any longer. It all depends on who you get for neighbors. I will just say that there are some people in the military that shouldn't have children. I heard words on the playground that would make the saltiest of sailors blush. The other problem I had were kids stealing my kid's toys off of our back patio. I bought a house in Berwick, Me. The taxes are pretty reasonable and it's only a 45 minute drive to Portland. Portsmouth's naval clinic is one of the worst I've ever dealt with. We are transferring this summer and our house is currently up for sale. If it hasn't sold by June 1st we will be renting it out.
Kittery is a bit far from Portland, but I am selling/renting a house in York county a little further north and knwo of another in York county that is for sale which would be closer to Portland. if interested let me know.
Thanks so much for your input. Will definitely pass on the info to husband and maybe sway his opinion. We don't want to buy right now, but also want to avoid multiple moves if a rental property isn't renewable for our 4 years there. We still have some time, well, a little...our moving day is June 1st. I just dread our household goods going into storage since I've heard that's how things are more likey to get lost/damaged.

I grew up in Portsmouth, NH and I have never heard anyone say that Kittery is a beautiful place to live. I don't know anything about the housing you mentioned.
I would suggesting looking further north.
Berwick, ME, or York maybe. You might even find something you like going up Rt. 236 from Kittery towards Elliot/Berwick if you like the boonies.
