I got orders to the Gallatin and am looking for a place to live. Looking for any advice on safe areas to live, or if anyone knows someone who is looking for a roommate (or renting) that would be great too! I will be out there in mid June. Thanks Smile

Goose Creek is nice and a quick commute to the cutters.

Stay away from North Charleston. Everywhere else is fine.

Also keep your car door locked and windows up when driving down Spruill Ave. on the way to work in the morning and DON'T stop for anything.

Outside of all that it's a great place to be. I loved my time there.

I lived in Mt. Pleasant as a E-5. Very doable, and I think it's the nicest place in Charleston. A bit of a drive (15-20 miles) but well worth the quality of living. West Ashley was also nice, but I prefer Mt. Pleasant.

I did 3 years on the GALLATIN, great ship. I miss it everyday.

What's wrong with Spruill Ave.? While at BO school we often ran out the gate to the Circle A! Big Grin

The key word here is "RAN". As in you were running.

I remember a parked car that was on fire at Spruill Avenue. The cops wouldn't even stop to investigate it! Spruill was also a great place to leave "unwanted" stuff Smile

Yeah, Cops, Fire Dept., Cabs and Pizza Guys won't even slow down on Spruill.

I once saw a cop drive right past a hooker buying crack in broad daylight and he acted like he was distracted by something shiny.

I think I saw that NORTH Charleston was the 8th most dangerous city in the U.S. It's hilarious that ALL of the surrounding areas are so nice and relatively crime free.

The GALLATIN adopted the stretch of highway (Spruill) right outiside the base. Once or twice a year everyone would "have" to go out an clean the road; XO made it manditory morale. Anyhow....we would have competitions on how many needles, crack pipes, and yes "used condoms" we would see on the street. All I can say is you can't imagine the crap we were put through! NASTY. Being from South Carolina I love the state, but N. Charleston has to be the a*****e of the state. Charleston is possibly the most beautiful city in America, but put the North in front of it, and RUN!!!
