I have a tricky question, and I am hoping someone can help me with it.

We are CG and will be assigned to a cutter at Portsmouth, VA. We are thinking of applying for military housing, but we want housing at the Northwest Annex in Chesapeake. We want that particular location due to the school district (Hickory).

My husband has just completed 10 years in the Navy and is now joining the CG. While in the Navy, we lived in Chesapeake, Va. Our daughter attended the Hickory School District during that time and would like to go back there.

1)Can I request that housing area only and just wait until something is available there?

2)Are we just put on a general list for Hampton Roads? and then if we deny an offer on another base, Are we put on the bottom of the list?

3)Where do CG Families fall into place on the housing list? Do the other services have priority over the CG? OR are all services treated the same and put on the waiting list by date of the Housing application?

Thank You

Has anyone lived there?
I have been told that the units are 2 story with a garage and a fenced yard.

I would call the area housing office and ask them. they would know the answer to your qustions and it is thier job to help you.

http://www.uscg.mil/mlclant/iscportsmouth/housing.htm

You will find for the most part the Coast Guard tends to live on the economy.

Babcock,

I just PCS'ed here. I am on the economy, but looked into housing. I would contact the Navy. They are building some pretty nice new housing in the area and I was told I could get into it if I wanted to. They did say I would have to be in the area to get on the list though.

Best of luck.....

Are you at NW or Portsmouth?
Any idea how long the wait is? and or where the new units are?
I placed a couple of emails to the Navy, but no response yet. Our recruiter rec'd the orders Today, we know the date for PTSP...and where we are moving to...(not much more than that, dates, who to contact and such)
I am sure that he will report to the area in mid Oct...He would check in once he arrives. We should have a copy of orders on Monday.
Thanks so much Smile

I talk to the Hampton Roads Housing office today.
They told me that because we are CG we would be priority 3 on the waiting list for "Navy" Housing, and that in order for us to get housing "nobody else would be on the list"...She made it sound impossible to get housing there...I find that hard to believe...I understand that it may take longer.
She did say that because he is at Portsmouth (CG Base)...Well if he was stationed on a Navy base things would be a little different, but he will be at Portsmouth.

Thanks for the links and the info, and I plan to get on the waiting list and see where it goes from there.

I called Portsmouth first and I was directed to "navy" housing. (They called themselves "Hampton Roads Housing Office" when they answered the phone.)
Is there some magic phrase that "COASTIES" have to say............when talking to other services?
Someone please fill me in.

if you are stationed out of ISCand not the Annex you don't quailfy for housing there. There is No housing for the CG out of ISC everyone either rents or buys.

We were told the same thing about trying to get on the "list". You would basically always be at the bottom of the list. There are so many rentals in the area, you shouldn't have a hard time trying to find a house to rent, unless you have a dog! Goodluck, there is alot less housing in the CG as compared to the navy.

CG sucks when it comes to housing in Hampton Roads. When I first got here in 2003 from the Army the CG told us we didn't qualify for housing because we didn't have children. In my prior 10 years in the Army I have never heard such rubbish, I always lived in goverment housing kids or not, but then thats the CG for you. Good luck in your transition from the Navy. Too bad the CG is too small to offer what other services do.

Housing Update:
We have applied for Navy housing and will be priority 3 on the list.
Isn't there some type of "FREEZE ZONE" on the waiting list? Once you get to a certain spot you quit bouncing around on the list?????

The first housing person led me to believe that it is impossible to get housing because we are CG. The second person that I am currently working with is much more hopefull. She is quite sure that she can get us into housing, but it may take longer than we will have time to wait.

I have also heard that if the CG member reports to the duty station without his or her dependants...the priority level changes

Why is it Navy or Army or AF housing?????
Shouldn't it be military housing?????
I have yet to be at a base that has only one service working on base.....
Maybe the housing fund was taken from the "Navy" budget, however, didn't that money come from our government............we only have one of those right?

I thought you only have to have a dependent...(spouse would qualify...)....

Yes we have a dog, and that absolutely makes finding a rental home more difficult, especially when you have a budget to stay within.

Anyway, Hopefully everything will work out.
Sometimes they tell you that crap to discourage you from applying...I didn't let it stand in my way. I really want housing in that area!!!!!!!!!
