A suggestion to prevent you from the SURPRISE I got:
When you think you are settled in on choosing a place, ask for copies of the last 12 months of utilities. Ten years ago, my roomate and I got hit with a $500 a month heating fuel bill, and we were on the Willow, gone half of the month with the thermostat set low enough we actually semi frooze some pipes. Beware of older places with oil heat!
Thanks for the suggestion!! We are aware of the heating cost, so it won't be a huge surprise to us. We are both from Upstate Ny and have lived in Mystic, CT where a lot of the places are pretty old as well and required oil.
My husband will be on the Willow. We have been to Newport many many times, and are looking forward to making it our home for a few years.
He should love the Willow and you both will probably really like the area. I was on the very first crew of the Willow and picked her up in the Great lakes. Also took her to Europe as my last patrol.
Highly recomend Coddington Brewery for a GREAT meal and really good beer! It is just outside of the base.
My suggestion in asking for actual bills is to know the coast for THAT house. A half inch of insulation may mean hundreds of bucks a month difference in two otherwise identical houses.

Depends on how far, we are looking for a 10-15 maybe 20 min. commute tops. Basically we are looking for places in Downtown Newport, near the Cliffwalk or Brenton Point Park.
