Just got orders to south portland maine! i know most of the area is beautiful.. just curious about the surrounding cities.. any reccomendations of cities surrounding south portland that are a little cheaper but still a nice area??? any info would be appreciated.thanks.

I wasn't stationed up there, but I do have family up there. If you don't mind a commute I would live in the southern side of the Lewiston/Auburn (LA) area. It would be about a 35 to 45 minute drive depending on the time of day.

Berwick, South Berwick, North Berwick. They are all nice small towns with good schools. A little of a commute though.

I live in Kennebunk, ME. The rents are a little on the high side, but you might be able to find something there.
I have 2 small children and we live there because of the school system. There is also a very good, town run Parks and Rec programs for the kids also.
Kennebunk is about halfway between Portland and Porstmouth and 1 1/2 hours from Boston, if you wanted to go in for the day.
It's about 30 minutes up the highway to the Sector.

I have a place available in North Berwick, Maine. Great schools and community, close to NH (Tax Free). Let me know if your interested and I can give you more information

I was stationed there for 6 years and lived in Portland, loved it. Sure you are going to pay just a little more but you will not have to drive 45-50 minutes to get to work. I would also look in Westbrook or Windham.

Lewiston/Auborn is about a 45 minute drive, high in crime and the Berwicks are a good 40 minute drive from South Portland.

I second the greater portland area. I have been stationed in portland and rockland for the last 5 years and lived in westbrook and scarborough. Both real nice areas. Windham, Falmouth, and Yarmouth are other nice places. A lot depends on how much you want to spend. Good luck
