SmileThere is a fs1 that goes by CGshipmate over on the fs topics thread that is station at tybee island..i am sure he would give you all the info you could want.

I was there a while back..just for vist..my favorite tv chef has 2 resturants in the area ..well one has her brothers name..but its her place i am sure..vist uncle bubba's if you go its on the way to tybee.

there also a movie called the "midnight in the garden of good and evil" when i took the tram ride into savannah the driver mentioned that movie alot it is sorta one of the claim to fames since it was filmed there..i like tybee..not so much savannah..but i am not a real big city fan..so that's just me you might like it.

if you vist station tybee..you will first have to enter this park..go see the fort..forgot the name but it is interesting..they have this guy all draped out in a old confederate uniform ..firing a musket loader..he reloads and fires again..its amazing the indians did,nt win here in the states ..with the time it takes to reload those things..

Lived there from 93-95, and I loved it. It is more laid back than Va Beach. I personally would not live IN Savannah, but in one of the surrounding counties. I lived in Liberty County and I truly enjoyed the place.
Good things about Savannah (IMHO), Location!, it is located about 2 hours from Jacksonville, 4 hours from Orlando, 6 hours from Tampa and about 7 from Miami. Jekyll Island is also off 95 south and it is a good spot to go camping, I did that a couple of times. Keep driving south and you can go to St. Augustine, which is another historical spot (The first Spanish settlement in North America). Make sure you hit San Marcos, which is kind of like a mini El Morro.

Tybee Island is like Va Beach as it is a tourist trap during the summer months. However, the beaches are ok. On the way to Tybee island you can stop by Fort Pulasky, very interesting historical site. One of the biggest things in Savannah is the River Walk and they have the biggest celebration besides New Orleans, of course, I am talking about St. Patrick’s Day. People come from all over the place to attend the parade and to go to the river walk at night. The cobblestone streets over there should remind you of El Viejo San Juan in Puerto Rico. Plenty of restaurants, stores, and if my memory serves me well there should be two major malls, Oglethorpe Mall and Savannah Mall. In addition, there is a nice size flea Market at the entrance of Savannah. There is a small airport but I would suggest driving to Jacksonville since they have an International Airport. There are other things but in regards to the housing market, I cannot tell you since it has been a while since I lived there but I do know that the market should be better than in Va Beach, meaning more house for the money.

Military bases I know there is Fort Stewart in Hinesville, about 40 minutes drive and Hunter Army Air Field right in Savannah. Of course, you have The Naval Base in Jacksonville but it is about a 2-hour drive. Get used to the Piggly Wiggly's and the Winn Dixies...lol

Ask me after watch if you want to know more.

I spent 4 years there from 00-04. I worked at the AirSta and lived on Wilmington Island. Savannah itself is really not that big but has everything you need. The housing market when I was there wasn't that bad. It's all about location, obviously. There are some relatively inexpensive areas which are a little further away from Savannah. Pooler, Rincon and Springfield are all 20-40 mins away but are great if you have a family and want the most for your money as far as real estate. Tybee is a small beach town with very little to offer on an E6 salary. Rentals are hard to find there and you know how expensive 'beachfront" property is. Wilmington Island and Whitmarsh Island are not too terribly bad for availability and price. Downtown Savannah is very historic and has a lot to offer as far as nice restaurants and bars. Midtown is typical of any progressive town. It has two malls and all the normal chain restaurants.
The reputation for schools there isn't stellar but it's not nearly as bad as where I live now--New Orleans. I'd say about middle of the road.

Hope this helps!

There's an increasing amount of married members who are moving to Pooler, Guyton and Richmond Hill. There's lots of land and homes to be bought out that way. Savannah is expanding to the west and south and those outlying towns are booming. The housing market should still be good for a '09 transfer. I've noticed (and I don't mean this in a rude way) that Savannah runs a few years behind the national climates in regards to economy and housing.

If you're single, Tybee and Wilmington islands are the place to be. A single member can easily afford a nice apartment on their own not to mention all the "perks" that come with being single in a beach town.

You want to avoid downtown Savannah (with regards to housing) due to it's high cost in the historic district and high crime just outside of it. Downtown Savannah is one of the best places to visit, you just don't want to live there.

I've really enjoyed my time here. I'll be sad when I leave next year.

i think that Bryan County has the best schools close to Savannah.... That's Richmond Hill and Pembroke... I personally would not live in Savannah...but the outlying areas are great...
