I hoping to hear from people currently living in the Gulfport area......How is the housing market?... (BAH for us 1289-) Are the schools up to par?? We have two children 1st & 3rd graders. Has the area been rebuilt?
It is that time of year, getting ready to make some picks Smile

What unit in Gport are you looking at? I am in Pascagoula, MS. Lot of the guys live either in Mobile or Ocean Springs. If you buy down in this area make sure you buy north of I-10, less chance of hurricane damage.

Not too sure about the schools seeing how I do not have children. But I will ask around for you.

Gulfport is about 70-80 miles from western part of city of Mobile, closer in county areas along I-10. Some people stationed in Gulfport lived in Slidell LA when I lived there, don't know if that is better or worse but a lot of the low areas of Slidell were under water after Katrina.

Housing still in a little bit of a short supply. Area is still rebuilding, but you can see improvements every day and the people are working (unlike NOLA in both categories).

Dave is right about above I-10, but you still have to make sure you're not in a flood zone because of rivers and bayous.

I don't know about the schools, but schools in Miz'ippi are not generally well considered.

Just left Gulfport in May. I wouldn't live north of I-10 near hwy 49 the traffic can be terrible in the afternoon. If you want to live north of I-10 you can take lorraine-cowan road or I-110 to get you there. There are some nice houses in the Ocean Springs-Gautier area (30 min. drive). I lived just north of the railroad tracks near the old VA hospital and made it through Katrina with only minor damage. The housing in Gulfport is older (70's style with wood paneling, normal to see 3 bedroom 1 bath). The prices were still above BAH level when we left. The schools are decent. Most people prefer Anniston elementary. My kids (2nd and 3rd grade) went to Anniston and were in the gifted pupil (advanced) classes and we were happy with their education. Anything below a 65 was failing. Gulfport still needs some work but they are coming back. Hope this helps.
