hi everyone, my hubby Ets'd last april and has decided that he wants to go back to active duty. he joined the national guard last july but has yet to recieve his AIT training or a bonus( due to no AIT yet) , We went to the AD recruiter yesterday and he told us we have a VERY small window of oppurtunity to get a conditional release because apparently they are getting orders that prior service members are going to be suspended from going back to AD for a while... is this true or does it sound like bs?? because he had us really convinced?? They kept stressing that we need to do this NOW... any help would be great thanx so much!

Sounds like total bs to me. Recruiters will bs like its a second language. Be careful. If a soldier wants to go back to Active Duty then thats a USAR dream come true. There is no way that the army would suspend prior service from coming back... they would welcome him back with open arms trust me... especially these days. The recruiter is making it sound like there isnt much need anymore for Active Duty Soldiers... BS!!!
Thats my 2cents. Good luck |

You have to read the OP's post carefully. She is talking about a transfer from the National Guard to the Regular Army. Here are the details she left for the rest of us to guess at: 1. Husband needs waivers? 2. Husband's rank. 3. Husband's MOS. 4. Does the Husband need to reclassify into a new MOS. 5. Is the suspension permanent or temporary (just for this Fiscal Year). So once all these questions are answered then perhaps you can slam his Recruiter. IMO, Recruiters tell the honest truth 95-98% of the time. To answer the title though. Prior Service are not being turned away. Only Prior Service with some of points 1-4 are. I asked about a week ago because of all the rumors on this website and while I know the situation is dynamic.....I'm pretty sure it hasn't changed that much in a week. One example: You can't keep taking SGT E5 into the Regular Army without eventually screwing over E4(p)'s that have been waiting to get promoted, its a fard fact of force management. Another example: Is it fair to someone that planned ahead and enlisted in the DEP in December and obtained a school reservation to be bounced by someone trying to enlist at the last minute (now) for training now (this summer). My answer is No, it's not fair and USAREC should have a policy of first come first served. |

Sorry for the lack of details : / ... hubby is a 19d specialist, does not need any waivers, he has an honorable discharge. The recruiter didnt mention how long the suspension was going to be, he just wanted to get my husband in as fast as possible. Im pretty new to all things army, so when we talked to the recruiter I pretty much took him seriously. I'm just concerned because going back to active duty is something he wants very much , and to go through the entire process of asking for a conditional release, if they are going to deny him entry into Active duty, I dont want to get his and my own hopes up... Oh.. and what exactly are the points , the 1-4 mean?? Thank you for the very informative responses tho! It helps a newbie like me

I believe those were the "points" he was referring to. According to the poster, anyone that meets any combination of those criteria is possibly facing being turned away by the recruiters. I've also been turned away; I need a waiver, but that is in a different post on the forums and won't go into that here. It does seem rather contradictory to what I've been hearing in the press to disallow prior service(albeit that require some elbow grease to get them through the round hole, so to speak) from expediently returning to active duty. In any case, statistically, competition for promotion can't possibly be as big of an issue as has been mentioned in this thread. It's not as if E-5's and above are returning en masse and thus a non-issue. Conversely, most E-5's and above that do return do so, from those I personally know, because they are called back in by Papa Army itself due to still being within their IRR status. The argument holds no water in my eyes. Edited for grammar and double-quoting |

Sorry for missing the obvious answer to my question about the points lol... Friends of ours that are stationed at Fort Irwin have told us that the soliders there have been warned that if they ets they wont be getting back in... this seems like a very complex issue, i dont know what to believe!!

I believe what the Recruiter is telling you might be correct. I also believe what your friends at Ft. Irwin are telling you is correct (probably heard via their retention NCO). So it's up to you and your Husband at this point. A similar thing happened last year, they started to close MOS' in April due to demand for the Summer. In your case, your Husband is not MOSQ'd? I believe the situation this year might be a little more draconian because of the bad Economy and the increased number of people attempting to gain re-entry. I do not know this for sure though. I DO NOT believe they will ban Prior Service from re-entry.....ever. Because, it's way too good of a deal for the Army to take them back. I do, however, think they might place further restrictions on Prior Service entering again.......hence the rumors are flying now. So if your Husband has an excellent record, is under 35, has some college and no need for waivers, etc. I would not be too concerned and if this is the case its rumor feeding fear. Your Husband's Recruiter would know more then I would though as he is hearing about the potential changes right from USAREC. Unfortunately, during times of uncertainty like this....you really have to listen and rely on your Recruiter. |

That doesn't like he's being turned away,, that sounds like he being reeled in as quickly as possible before your husband changes his mind. |

heyy.. thanks for all the replies .. Well Hubby talked to his 1st sergent anf they told him with all the people joining the guard, and the need to fill ranks, that they were going to allow anyone who wanted out to rejoin the army, out. However, his 1st sergent is trying to convince him into still doing his reclass training in order to save face with his superior, I guess because hes been handing in many cancellations for training. I have advised my husband that this is NOT a good idea because it will make the process even harder to go back to active duty plusss from my understanding, with the money they put into training, the guard will not want to release him easily. AND his guard nco said he doesnt need a 4187??? that all he has to do is fill out a conditional release form, which sounds sketchy to me, since after talking to the Active duty recruiter, he said it was essential??

If he goes to ait on the ng's training slot/dime then my understanding is that he will not get a release and will "owe" them.
I'm not sure there are many people here who have gone ng to active without doing ait and having a 1st sgt who isn't a fan of it so we may be of limited help. You may want to try the goarmy site with official forums. |

FYI, I am an Army Reserve Career Counselor. Just a thought for those who fall in this group. I see several Soldiers each month who left the Active Army and went into the Army Reserves to finish out thier MSO, then after some time they want to go back to the Active Army it is becoming more difficult... I love it when Soldiers go active, they like it I love it, as long as they stay in boots.
The following memo did come out in Nov 08 in regards to the topic at hand: Conditional release "We can no longer sustain the previous liberal conditional release policy; therefore, conditional release approval authority is restricted to the commands/agencies listed in the paragraphs and will not be further deligated without my written approval, LTG Jack Stultz. Now there is more to the memo if you want me to send it to you. The Active Army and go Reserve to do your remainder of time and then want to go back to active it is becoming more difficult... I ETSed in 1983 I wanted to come back in the Army around Jan of 85. I had to wait until they were taking prior service again as when I contacted the Recruiter prior service was suspended. Current rumor is prior service will have a tough time coming back in again. Army is currently way ahead of its recruiting and retention goals for the year. Comes down to being able to pay everybody. |

heyy, just thought I would write an update... well we havent heard back from the active duty recruiter, but hubbys NG unit told him that the process of getting a conditional release would take 90 days..So im going to keep my fingers crossed... Im having a bit of an issue with his nco, who is trying to finagle him into going thru with his reclass training for 11b, He is still considered 19d (cav scout) but because there were no units close by , they had wanted him to reclass to 11b. Ive been doing some research, most of the useful info I have been getting it thru here *thanks!! * He has an honorable discharge, no waivers ness, crystal clear record, 5 years in after being stop lossed twice, and is qualified for a critical mos , cav scout... Just hope the window stays open long enough for this to all go thru , learning very quickly about all of this!! LOL

I am Prior Service and waiting to go to MEPS. The Active Army Recruiter 1st. Sgt was in the office while I was there and he was congratulating me on possibly being the last PS recruit from Southern Ohio. He said that within a month or so the window will close.

I did a direct NG to RA transfer in May 1984. Back then I was in the 18-20 year age group they were really looking for though. The Army goes through cycles with the Economy. This Economic retrenchment is particularly severe but definitely needed to wring out the idiocy in our Economy. We'll emerge a much stronger country Economically because of this and it won't be long before Army Recruiting is needing recruits again (probably not this year though and this is going to last for most of next year). The Army specifically asked Congress NOT to touch the bloated FY 2010 Recruiting Incentives budget. So I am pretty sure the Army feels this is only temporary as well. |
