All I've been hearing latley is that you can only re enlist for 4..I joined the infantry with the whole idea I was gonna get to see some combat..Now here I am in Iraq and the war for the most part is over.So I've been thinking about re enlisting for Afghanistan since there is still soeme fighting going on there. However I don't want to give another 4 years of my life up to the military...that in my opnion is too much time I'd like to get out sometime well im still young and also for the fact is I dont want to get to Afghanistan and the war be over and be in the same situation I am now then feel like a idiot with 4 years left to go.
Therefore is there anyway I can re-enlist for only 2 years ? which would give me enough time for one more deployment..or are there other options such as trying to extend my contract so I can PCS to a unit deploying to Afghanistan...Is there a way to choose to get sent to a unit preparing to deploying to Afghanistan ? Im about a year out. |

I was told they are only letting people reenlist for 2 years if there window is before OCT. so you can probably go see your career counselor to see if you can reenlist early, so you can get two years...that is all due to the enormous sworm of people joining due to a declining economy...
If I were you I would reconsider getting out only because it is very hard for people to get jobs around here to include veterans...that veterans preference stuff isn't always true...there is a reason why a lot of priors are going back in and people with like 3 degrees... Try another duty station if the one your at sucks...if you want to deploy you need to get with a unit that often deploys like the 82nd... |

A little more insight on Veterans Preference...
IMO and the design of Veterans Preference. Veterans Preference only really works when qualifications are equal and the deciding factor are the points. The presumption is that Veterans Preference means they will ignore all other applicants and you get Preference for the position. Also, hiring via the Government although it should be fair and open, in a lot of cases it is not. They post on the government websites for the same reasons civilians post on Monster.com. Legally they have to show the position is open. In some cases, they already know who will get the position before the posting goes up. Officially, they cannot make a decision until all the resumes are reviewed.......you can't prove when the decision was made and thats the problem. Sometimes it's made prior and they have a internal transfer in mind. Thats why government jobs are viewed as so difficult to obtain. I applied for a Army Civilian job once upon a time and I went to the front of the line past all the recent Veterans and I've been out 20+ years. It was because of what was on the resume over-rided the Veterans Preference. So thats how Veterans Preference works, IMO. Everyone has a different view though. A lot can change in a year with the Economy and if you have the GI Bill, the Economy shouldn't matter all that much, IMO. This message has been edited. Last edited by: ErichG2, |

I'm in the 82nd, if we want to reup it's 2 years or nothing. If you want to deploy, you want the 82nd.
