Currently the option to change your PMOS only reserves a training slot for that school and Ranger school is not a reenlistment option. You need to submit a 4187 for ranger training with a follow-on assignment to fort lewis. It is not offered as a reenlistment option because of the review procedures required by that school. You must complete a physical, have a certain APFT score, volunter for airborne duty/ranger duty on a statement, etc. If approved, you would attend airborne school, ranger school and if you successfully complete both, be assigned to a Ranger Battalion. Once your training is approved, you would reenlist Option 1 to fulfill the service remaining requirement.

Well, I've been retired for 5 years and didn't pay attention to any BRAC at Fort Lewis, but I don't think that there are any airborne units at Fort Lewis. If you reenlistment for airborne school, the Army is going to have you use that training they just paid for by assigning you to an airborne unit normally.

Why don't you just take the Ranger Physical, APFT, sign the volunteer statement and submit a request to to Ranger School?

^This^ You can reenlist for RIP (E4 and below) or ROP (E5 and above). They send you to Airborne school first and then follow on to RIP/ROP. My understanding from a few Rangers who served in Regiment were that if you pass RIP/ROP at some point they will usually ask which Battalion they would like to be assigned to. If they have the slots you will get your choice. More than likely if you make it through RIP you will be able to choose Fort Lewis.
