So here is the stituation. I got demoted back to E-1. Should be E-2 soon. I want to reenlist but rentention is saying I have to be an E-4 to reenlist. But even with waivers, I will not be able to make my E-4 before my reelistment window closes. I ETS in June 2012. So I did some research on my own at the Army Reenlistment web site. After reading it. It sounds like I can reenlist under the Reenlistment Option 1

Line: 1

Item: Name of option

Comment: Regular Army Reenlistment Option

Line: 2

Item: Description of option

Comment: Assignment to training or duty to the needs of the Army

Line: 3

Item: Reenlistment period

Comment: Qualified Soldiers may reenlist for 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 years, regardless of grade or amount of service completed. Assignment to training or duty to the needs of the Army. Soldiers in the rank of SSG or higher regardless of strength who have 10 or more years AFS on the date of discharge will be restricted to an indefinite term of reenlistment, unless prohibited by other provisions of this regulation .

Line: 4

Item: Prerequisites

Comment: Meet basic eligibility criteria and reenlist in the timeframe prescribed in chapter 3 with or without waiver(s) of disqualification(s). New ETS date must be greater than one year from contractual ETS date.

Line: 5

Item: Option Information

Comment: Soldier must understand--This option carries no guarantee of assignment, training, or stabilization. Soldiers will be assigned and utilized according to the needs of the Army. Soldiers, except those reenlisting to meet service remaining requirements, may be assigned to their present duty assignment or to any vacancy for which qualified. A subsequent extension is required if the term does not meet the service remaining requirements.

Line: 6

Item: Option processing procedures

Comment: Normal processing procedures prescribed by this regulation. If applicable, assignment instructions will be requested in accordance with AR 614-200.

Line: 7

Item: Special processing for overseas commands

Comment: None

Line: 8

Item: Statements required for reenlistment

Comment: DA Form 3286, Parts I through IV, for all Soldiers.
(POL MSG 11-01) Part II, Item 2, enter on the second line "In accordance with the needs of the Army under the Indefinite Reenlistment Program."

In Line 3 states "Qualified Soldiers may reenlist for 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 years, regardless of grade or amount of service completed. Assignment to training or duty to the needs of the Army. "

So what is up with the whole you have to be E-4 to reenlist, when it clearly states that I can reenlist REGARDLESS of my grade or amount of service completed? Please help me understand this better! I really dont care what duty station they give me or if I have to stay where I am at or reclass. I just want to reenlist! I make 3 years in Jan 2012. Contract end in June. Thank you for your help!

Re-enlisting like enlisting is a priviledge, not a right. You took a bust, that automatically causes some re-enlistment problems. Did you check to see if that included a flag/bar on re-enlisting? If so, only the Cdr can lift the bar. Times are hard and the service is cutting 50k of troops in the next year. There are folks who are good but not good enough to get promoted above the retention point who are not being allowed to re-enlist either. You can check the next higher level Re-up NCO, but a BN/Field Grade ART-15 in hard times is normally a killer for re-enlisting.

This was my job for 18 years so you can take what I say as FACT!

1. What you posted only applied to soldiers who are fully eligible to reenlist.

2. Reenlistment eligiblity is covered in Chapter 3 of AR 601-280 and it say YOU MUST BE an E4 to be eligible to reenlist. Also not flagged for any adverse action.

3. Go back and read the page (140) before the page you copied. It clearly says that you must be SPC.

So unless you get promoted to SPC - your out of the Army at your current ETS. Sorry.

Back in the day of the two year enlistments (early 80's) this caused some problems for people (like me) who did two years active then ETS with a "not eligible to reenlist" code because they weren't E4. Trying to get back in after college - even having been in the Reserves the whole time - required a waiver.
