Jim,
Too old - can't dance. Now I just sit around on my ASSumptions about the past, pondering the present, hoping the future will be brighter. Have a good one, my friend, D |

D, It's all in the mind. Mind over matter, and if you don't mind, I don't mind either......... Well, I stuck my neck in the noose once more. When all else fails, I assume the mantel of Chapter 82. Don't know if you have been following the antics of National lately, but this isn't the forum to start on that theme..................Jim |

Jim,
...or "Without a Mind, very little Matters" I decided long ago to remain above the fray regarding the Association. In fact, mostly I just stay clear altogether. Remember when...? When Chapters I and XVIII merged...Aw hell, forget it. You know what I mean. Later my friend, D |

Lord Please Give Me The Strength....nowhattamean? Although, having been a Chartering Prez twice along with charter member of three Chapters, it is difficult to give up on something you believe in. As discussed with some who want to see it stay alive there just isn't that many left who really give a #$%@#%$. For some reason those who do are too far away to make a difference. (guess i'll just creep back to the hole in the wall) G'nite Don............® |

Kevin, Respectfully. WTF are you talking about? Throttle back. There is no secret, confidential or even remotely sensitive information here. SOC-USA is a private contractor that deals primarily with infrastructure support and logistics. It has a small security division and advertises job openings in openly-published trade rags and non-sensitive websites. Cool off. |

Then I thought that "D" may know see something that I am missing, as he sees things in a much more abstract view then I do sometimes. However, all of a sudden it hit me in the face. Sometimes I do sound off before thinking with a bad taste in my mouth, but unless you have participated in, dealt with, any topic that arises, be it SOC, SOG, SOA, SFA, or what ever, please make sure of your claim to fame before casting arrows and barbs. And the same to you kind sir. I guess the wife and I will dine at the Legion or some other place serving Thanksgiving Dinner, then on to the hospital to visit her mother who just received two knee replacements Monday.
Talked with another old Soggie who might be interested in joining our little tit for tat and such here in the forums. This man went into the Education arena following his retirement. He's also our Chapter VP....® |

Call me sentimental, but I liked the days when an operator was somebody who worked for the telephone company.

Amen Brothers, Amen!!! I can recall the days when we was referred to as the Snake Eaters, Sneaky Pete's, and someone once called the RTOs SF Operators. We thought that was pretty neat, so while I was on the Group Commo Committee, some of us used to sign off as the SFO, which went over like a fart in the middle of church services.
Soon to arrive on the Hill was Colonel William P. Yarborough, who shortly there after, became the "Center CG" who overheard a couple of us making such a comment, during the Dog and Pony Show rehearsal. About a week later, the Gp CO received a directive from Center to inform all SF Radio Operators to stop using the term SF Operators, it sounded repugnant, I think was the term used. In any case we did (in public). TRIVIA QUIZ: Our first Green Berets came from Germany, many came from Asia, but......how many know where the first Legally Authorized OFFICIAL Green Beret came from? Personally, I think the answer to the question should be made part of the History of the Green Beret. Another one: Aaron Bank was the Father of Special Forces, who was the Father of the Green Beret? ® |

First legally authorized berets were acquired from Canada.
Major Herbert Brucker came up with the SF notion in 1953. First worn by ODFA-32 under First Lieutenant Roger Pezelle. Here's another bit of trivia: In 1943, the First Ranger Battalion (Darby's Rangers) upon completion of Commando Training at Achnacarry Castle in Scotland, were intially authorized (by the British only) to wear the green Scottish Tam Beret...this of course did not fly with the US Army. What do I win? |

What do I win? Cool............... UhhhHaaa, we are discussing the Official Green Beret, here Lad. Granted Roger and Herb 'founded' rather 'adopted' the German Army Beret for his Special Troops. Soon to be adopted by the entire Group, per Colonel Bank and his successors, some to brave the cold eyed stares and chastisement from such as General Abrhams. Such as did Darby and his Lads. It seems to me that the conventional Army never has had any type of sense of humor have they? Going back to the Pony Soldiers, who were chastised by the Lords of Infantry even when their butts were being saved by the horsemen. Oh well, Ontario is correct in your assumption, however was you aware that the first pair of Berets that we received across the supply room counter was actually a Girl Scout Beanie with no stiffener, and a black singed spot about the size of a dime where the tassels had been singed off. That is the very same place the berets are made today, only with modifications more becoming the wearer, as we now see the beret. In fact, that factory is where all the berets are made in North America. Unless of course over the past thirty years or so someone in the USofA built a beret manufacturing plant in CONUS. FYI, the beret is spun from the center out, which is the reason for the tassel. Further, my friend, General William P. Yarborough is considered the father of the Green Beret, in the archives and history books of the modern Special Forces. One interested enough to dig deep enough as you did, will learn the dark secrets of SF. Speaking of which, are you aware that there are writers of SF History who truly were not even there when some of the stories he wrote took place. In fact we have one who wrote two books and never served day one outside the CONUS, and some of his tales are too far fetched to even enlighten those who was actually there doing what he wrote about. White Star comes to mind, off the top of my head......Gutun nacht mein frien, haben zu gut tag, hauter morgen..........Herr Ringlander (Of the Clan MacGreggor vs 13th Century Scottish Highlanders) PS; You win a big kiss in the ear............. |

Jim,
I stand properly chastized: I am unduly predjudiced when thinking of the Papa of the Beanie only because I actually met Roger Pezelle once...as a colonel with the Joint Casualty Resolution Center. My team daddy elbowed me in the ribs (ouch) and said, "That's him...that's the guy who first actually had his Team wear 'em". I thought I was in the presence of SF Royalty. So having a copy of the picture of JFK and Yarborough in my scapbook, I figured that you, the Sage holder of SF history and Chief Defender of the Faith, was throwing a curveball. What I get for thinking. I shall now put 40 pounds in a ruck and run 40 miles with it on my ankle to do penance for my sins. Wir wunschen Ihnen eine gute ein und mein Freund, aber ich muss fragen ... warum sind Sie so spat?... es ist bei weitem meine vergangenheit zubettgehen. |

To the chase, You was right, you was in SF Royalty at the time. Any member of the Family who distinguishes himself in some manner or other, is in the SF History Book forever and regaled by all those who were/are privy to the fete. Be it legal or illegal. Now, not all such achievements go heralded as many remain unheralded and known only to those involved. With that said, no need to go with forty pounds ten would do fine..................... |

Jim,
Best part of the movie. Lot of guys hated Disneyland...and I understand why (I filled in for a buddy on another team one weekend when his wife popped), but it sure was fun to watch if you didn't participate. My folks never saw Gabriel but I took my uncle once. He ate it up. Ich bin der Loslosung von Kleinwaffen und leichten Waffen fuhrend. Well now Kimosabe, Karin and Monika were two of the top flight waitress' in the NCO Club at Flint Kaserne. Paul Redfern was dating Karin back in 63. He took her for a ride on his rented WWII motorcycle an awful lot. On one trip from Tolz to Linggriess he was forced off the road a tad and the guard rail cable burned a big arse long hole the diameter of the cable down to the bone. Both he an Karin sent some time in the hospital being skin gaffed back to something like it used to look. Raul took the brunt of the injury, but was also the one most likely to lose a leg for awhile. Karin fared a tad better, but had one heck of a gash in the thigh. Speaking of the Gabriell Demonstration Area, that thing appeared while I was on a trip to Tolz. I was duly critiqued on it and it's "value" to the efforts of SF training and indoctrination command. While a member of the GP Commo Committee, then later SFTG Branch and T&T Committee, I served well and often on that stage. I also participated with some of the other guys who had "Stations" to set up and tear down. Because of my miniature stature, I almost found myself dangling at the end of the sky hook lanyard one time. But, NO!, I refused to go. I think it was in 62/63 time frame, when Mrs. "A" paid us a visit. I was on the Branch Committee and Steve Arrowood was the NCOIC of the O&I Committee. Well, it was pouring cats, dogs, mice, and horse hocky. We received word that Group/Center wanted to put on a special dog and pony show for her, and we are like, are you people out of your ever loving minds, WTFO???? In any event, Steve garnered one of the eighty-deuce's training Quonset huts. If you go to our website and open up the window on Mrs. "A" and open window #16 you will see the team standing there in their glory. I am in the center on the deck and if you look close you can see all the wet footprints on the deck and Mrs "A" sitting there in all her glory. I usually enjoyed it, beacuse you got to meet some of the most unusual folks in the world, and everyone participated in the Q & A period, when we had time for one......."Man, them was the days!!!..............Jim |

You got me thinking of old times.
The Karin I remember was dating some guy from 7th Army NCO Academy...he was shackin' up with her in town. Good shot of the Gabriel Team in front of Mrs A. The weekend I filled in Disneyland Duty for my buddy over in A572, Colonel Maggie was supposed to show up but it didn't happen. But I did meet Bob Howard the next day while cleaning the gear...talk about Royalty, right? Have a good one, D |
