I heard a nasty rumor the other day that SFAS is now only 10 days of actual suck. Now, I know better to believe BS like that, but I thought I'd come straight to the experts and ask anyway. I couldn't imagine condensing what I did into 10 days. Like I said, I'm 99% sure it's total BS and could probably call up an SF recruiter and get my answer in less than a minute, but I thought I'd waste YOUR time instead

Wrong, it's been shaved down to only 45 minutes of suck, the rest is like spring break at Virginia Beach.

VA Beach...Spring Break....in the same sentence....??? The universe just shuttered 1/10 of nano.
I lived there for 4 years...it's amazing how some people (mostly northerners) think the place is a tropical resort. It's dirty, chilly water 10 out of the twelve months, riddled with crime that never gets to the media, and full of sailors to top it off. Businesses do their best to push the tropical idea by planting palms (that they have to replace because of frosts), ....the place just sucks during the summer, too many people crammed in 5 miles of beach and not enough parking, police officers, and full of harley knock off shops and cheap beach vendors on and off the boardwalk. My rant is over...unless you want to talk some more about Virginia Beach, then just let me know. |

There are beaches in Yorktown, Newport News, Hampton, Fort Story, etc. Don't have to go to Va Beach. I'll tell you what though, Hampton Roads is like a chillier Orlando but with beaches. If you've got a famliy there is tons to do.
Best thing about Va Beach is the rucking. After I got back from selection I went to see one of our 18D's because I couldn't feel any of my toes. He and another doc said rucking barefoot in the sand is the best thing for strengthening foot, ankle, and calf muscles. You can ruck those miles of sand without having to retrace your route so much like at Yorktown, which I have to go back and forth like 20 times. But yeah, shaved down to ten days? I tried telling these guys there's no way they can select effectively with just 10 days of actual events. I'm going to play on what they are saying and let them think SFAS got "easier". Friggin 88M's. |

I always wanted to get dropped off in Corolla, or even as far south as Southern Shores in NC and ruck the beach up through the state line up to Dam Neck. I have about 8 months to get it done before heading to FL for good. |

Last time I went to Virginia Beach (July '78), we got nailed by Jelly fish. There were billions of them, about the size of a quarter. I was engaged to a girl in Williamsburg, she wanted to go to the beach. You're right, it was cold!!!! We were there about 1/2 hour when the jellyfish came drifing in. Nasty little buzzards. I liked Myrtle Beach a lot better. And Yorktown. I love that place. Surrender Field, at dawn, is incredible. The spot the US became a nation. Even my Wife, who's not a history nut, could feel the history. We were there in Dec '06. |

Yeah, jellyfish come in strong atleast once or twice a year. Should have been here last summer when the south east coast were experiencing strong red tides...the beaches and the water/surf were covered in dead fish for days, looking half eaten and rotten.
Water really doesnt warm up, or become consistentaly warm until the end of July through Oct...It can be hot as you know what during June and July but because of upwelling the water can be in the upper to mid-sixties one day, and mid seventies the next. Virginia is a Historians paradise. One reason i decided to major in history edu. |

10 days would not suck near enough.
I would demand a whole lot more sucktime than that. |

Anyone stayed at The Cape Henry Inn at Virginia Beach?

Nope, but I was at the military beach there a couple weekends ago. 100 degrees and the water felt spectacular.

Yes, the Cape henry inn is nice, but i think the beach <10 miles south and access to the beach from the hotel at Dam Neck Naval Lodge is better.

I should have said it is nicer beach, not necessarily access, but better beach. i.e. You cant surf on Fort Story, but you can at Dam Neck. |

You can boogie board at Story. I wouldn't embarass myself by trying to surf the East Coast. Just my one cent.

Self Correction again...
You can surf Fort Story, but they do not allow it....whereas Dam Neck allows surfing. You can not take a surfboard onto Pendleton State Military Reservation at all. I tried and was told to u-turn it, even after explaining i wouldnt surf. Pendleton sits right next to Croatan where a decent spot breaks. |

It has been 14 days since it was shortened from 24 and contains everything the longer version did. Thor |
