I have been reading the posts in this forum and others, but have not been able to find an answer to this question; even on the army website.

Anyway, i was wondering if it is possible to go through the ROTC progam and join the 75th Ranger Reg or 1 of the 3 Ranger Battalions. I know that as an officer it would be possible for me to go to Ranger School, but i would not be guaranteed a position on a Ranger team; i would only be "ranger Qualified." Basically would it be possible to go through RIP as an officer or is that a course open only to enlisted soldiers.

Thanks for any help you can offer me. If this is a stupid question, I'm sorry but I just havent been able to find the answer anywhere

Have you tried Armyranger.com? I have to warn you though, before you post anything on there, make sure you read their section on opsec otherwise you'll get flamed like no other. Trust me, I know from experience there.

If you get comissioned as an infantry 2LT you will go to Ranger school. Graduation is on you.

I have never seen a second lieutenant in the Regiment that wasn't prior service enlisted with Regiment, period. You will go to your first assignment, and get PL time there. Only after serving successfully in a big Army unit will you have a chance to go to ROP (not RIP, thats for E5 and below).

If being in the Regt is what you want to do, then get your degree and enlsit with an option 40. After your time in Bn get commissioned and then apply to get back to the Regt; after being a good NCO and making the connections you will make while in Bn you should have a leg up on anyone who wants to be their as an officer. The bottom line is you could be the best LT in the history of the Amry, but getting a PL slot in Regt is still political and out of your control.

Very true advice from rgr1stbat. It is very political. A very good friend of mine spent 11+ years in Regiment with 3rd Batt and HHC 75th, went to OCS as a SFC and still didn't get into Regiment as an O (with nearly every Army school and a masters degree). He couldn't even get into my company with a strong recommendation from me, a PSG who spent nearly five years with the company. I can only think of one that was at 1st Batt as a PSG and went back as a 2LT and got a PL job.

And don't ask this question on AR.com, you are only asking for issues there. We are much more likely to answer you without comments in this forum.

Ranger batt requires that you do a command in another infantry unit before commanding in batt.

For instance you go ROTC then commission. After receiving your commision you would go to IOBC and attend Ranger school. If you do not make ranger school, consider your career as an infantry officer over(assuming you are going infantry of course). You would then have to go to a unit and do your two years as a platoon leader then you can put in to attend ROP and if picked up would lead a Ranger Batt platoon for your two years. At this point you would have to leave or do staff and would not be able to lead a company until you have done so somewhere else in the Army.
