The accusations made on the video clip literally made my stomach turn. I have had an ongoing claim with the VA for (among other things) a head injury that resulted in a visable dent (scar) in my forehead through my right eyebrow - and the American Legion Rep looked at my scar at blurted out that the scar alone is worth 40% - plus I have documented proof in the form of x-ray photos showing my spine out of alignment and a chiropracter's statement stating that my head injury is directly connected to my spine misalignment (not to mention any other injuries sustained to my head like the concussion that I had for 3 days and was on med-watch on the ship). To date I have been continually denied.
The VA even went so far to ask me for a copy of my medical records (not the separation paperwork) and denied my claim for non-receipt - BUT ACCORDING TO THE BUREAU OF RECORDS, THE FRICKIN' REGIONAL VA HAD MY MEDICAL RECORDS ALL ALONG!!! Edwin, did you feel as sick to your stomach as I feel right now? Now what do I do? Who do I need to pester to get this fixed - because (trust me) I can do fix this... but I need to know where to start. Amy |

He did not like the responses he received from his previous post on the same subject so he started a new one. More than one person has shown him the SPD codes and the old SPN codes that were used in the past. There are no secret codes used on the DD 214. Spent the last ten years as a PN in the Navy. The last 5 of those 10 were as my Command's Personnel Officer and Admin Div O as well as the CCC (Yes I was enlisted the whole time) Amy you need to get yourself a new NSO from the Legion, DAV, VFW, MOPH etc. If your records were at the VA the entire time and your NSO/VSO did not know, or did not do any thing to help your case they are not worth a (#$@!. Don't give up! Become a pain in the VA's six and drive on. It will take some time and you will have to jump through some hoops, but it is all part of the BS red tape everyone has to cut through. Not saying that it is right, but it is a fact. Had certified copies of all my records together, Medical, Dental, (from both military and Civilian) and personnel records after my med board for the Navy, and it still took almost a full year to get a decision from the VA. Have your NSO/VSO get copies of them for you, if they tell you they cannot, get a new VSO/NSO. |

Hey thanks for the reply. I am currently working with a new guy with legion so hopefully things will get moving now.
More to follow. Gotta go make the kids dinner before the natives get too restless... Ah the business of running a household while trying to battle the VA... Never a dull moment. |

DISCOUNT ATTIC, if you watched the DVD, my email address is there, contact me, will give phone number, or give me yours. Can help ! Took me 20 years to get paid, & remember those lawyers in VA Wash. DC who were sent to jail for destroying medical evidence in more than 100,000 veterans claim folders at BVA. Same thing at Regional Offices. Make effort to contact me.

NAVAL GRUNT, for your information, BEFORE 1975, the SPN/SDN code appeared on the DD-214 of veterans. AFTER 1975, it went on the 8 or more copies of DD-214 required by D.O.D. Directive. I wish you would not give out false data to those on this site, I HAVE DOCUMENTED PROOF OF WHAT I SAY, what have you got ? Will FAX documents to those who contact me with FAX #. DO NOT mislead brother veterans, that is an injustice !! I AM THE LEADING AUTHORITY ON THESE CODES, PERIOD

So you are the leading authority on these codes hu? FYI, I was a Personnelman in the Navy for the last 14 of 17 years in the service. A Personnel Officer (by titile not rank) in the Navy for the last 10 of those 14 years, and as such I Processed and QAd DD214s (and 215s if needed) every day. I will gladly give you the names of people who know me and my reputation. I was Always willing to help people out be it a Vet, Active Duty, Reserve, or Fleet Retired member. It was due and I required it of all my subordinates. Not every one liked the answers they received, but I didnot and will not LIE about my job. There is no misleading of our brothers and sisters on my part, no false information given to anyone by myself. I have No fax at home, so if you would like me to see your proof, Scan them in and send them to me via E-Mail Navy_Grunt@military.com
Oh by the way I did watch your program on line. This is my opinion. Sir, you need help. It appears to me in my again "opinion" that you enjoy attention and creating law suits. Has the US Supreme Court even heard your first case yet? You stated on your TV program you were given a code that stated you mishandled personal affairs. While your 214 shows a code of 411 Early separation of overseas returnee. Which is it? If it was wrong, Did you ever request or receive a 215 to correct this error? Where is this VA claim number you are talking about on the 214? Was there as you say rampant misuse of the codes? Perhaps there was in the past. The VA has had a very bad reputation for abuse of vets, that is not a secret at all. Again, have you read the changes to the DOD/ARMY/NAVY/AIRFORCE/MARINE CORPS/COAST GUARD REGS and instructions that are current? We use the codes to show why a person was discharged, it also requires an explanation of the code on the 214. Codes are not malicious, not malevolent, and no conspiracy. Its no secret. It never was. If you will look at the Narrative Reason For Separation (Block 28-DD214-Member-4 Copy) will tell you the exact definition of the SPD code. Member Copy 4 tells you all the data you need to know, even what the Separation Authority was, i.e. A SECNAV Message, Army Reg, Air Force letter and so on. Where are the regulations you state on the TV program that prohibit telling the Vets what the codes are? Haven’t ever seen it. In fact we are required to explain everything on the 214 to the member. Not saying that there is not, nor never has been earthsacks in the government that have been doing things on the down low. It does happen. But as I, and others have stated before here on Military.com and other sites for that mater, the codes are issued to all personnel upon separation from the service and an explanation as to why they were separated is shown. Anyway if you want a new DD 214 without a SPN code and you were in the US Army, submit a written requests to have a SPN code removed from your DD 214 (Report of Separation From Active Duty) or earlier discharge papers, to: Commander Reserve Components Personnel & Administrative Center Box 12479 Ollivette Branch St. Louis, MO 63132 |

From start to finish it took me less than a year to receive my letter for 100% T&P. Had a very good VSO by the name of Jason Million who works for the MOPH in Muskogee OK. I did also follow the advice you gave about going to the VA and checking on ghost payments. Name SSN thumbprint. Guess what? Nothing! Oh by the way they did ask me if I had ever heard of you, or seen your program on the web. |

Know what you mean Shipmate! Kids are a hand full at times, but so worth it. The best job in the world is being a parent. If you run into problems let me know, I have several friends who are VSOs/NSOs for MOPH/DAV/VFW/Legion. Hang in there and don't give up it will work out in the end, but it will take some time. Oh drink to the Foam! |

Guys, it would appear that you both are on two different sides of the same argument (kind of the like the scenario where they ask the three blind guys to describe the elephant and they are in three different locations around the elephant). What you both bring to the table is experience (1) as insiders to both the internal paperwork process (Grunt) and the external paperwork process (Crosby), (2) as veterans from different jobs, seemingly different eras, and different branches of service, and (3) as two people who have had completely DIFFERENT post-military experiences: Grunt has had an excellent track record with claims and such, and Crosby has had up-hill battle after up-hill battle with his.
The rest of the military world can draw from both of your experiences - as MANY OF US had up-hill battle after up-hill battle trying to get our claims processed and are continually denied - and there are those of us like Grunt who do know how to write and can more easily (in most cases) maneuver through the bureaucratic system easier than others. I have had both experiences, so here I am in the middle and need help. I was surprised to find that I did not have any SPD codes on my DD-214 as I was in a battle of stubbornness with my command prior to my release from active duty. I had been sent to the skipper on a couple of occasions for (mostly) insubordination (go figure - Me? I couldn't shut my mouth when it would have been most beneficial to me? Nah, can't be true! That pleasant surprise notwithstanding, the RE-4 shouldn't effect my post military VA claim as the discharge was Honorable - and that should be the only key. OK, bottom line to a long post: don't fight with each other as we veterans can draw from BOTH of your experiences - could you imagine what kind of team you two could make if you worked together? The claims world would be running scared! |

I was honorably discharged in 1968 from the Navy. No where do I see SPN on my DD214 however, I do see Bupers Manual Art. C-10310-XXX in the box that reads "Authority and reason" The XXX corresponds to a behavior that had absolutely nothing to do with my discharge. If these 3 numbers are the SPN numbers then, they couldn't possibly be viewed as anything but secretive! Are these three numbers the SPN code? |
