My father in law was tod from Kadeana to thialand with 18th TFW. Now that we're applying for comp. due to agent orange they say we need proof he was on ground in Nam which mom in law remebers him writting from Da Nang. service papers only show toThialand he also has VSM. Could these orders maybe not been filed with US since Kadeana is only air not in US? I've been seeing lots of air folk having same trouble. ANYBODY HELP APPRECIATED!!!!!

I'm trying to follow your statement you wrote. If I understand you right he stopped at Da Nang TDY either enroute from Kadena or to Kadena but long enough to earn the VSM?

I checked with my father who controlled all USAF personnel movements in Vietnam during one tour 71-72.

He states that if you can located any TDY orders, flight orders or even the order authorizing him the VSM should be sufficient proof that he was in Vietnam.

If you don't have copies on hand then try the archives at St Louis.

First of all THANK YOU for responding to my post. My father-in-law was stationed at Kadena with the 18th fld maint. sqd. He was temporary duty ordered to Thailand on Jan. 7, 1966 with the 18th TAC FTR WG, he as with the 18th fld maint sq. organiation, which we do have the orders for this. My mother-in-law knows she receive letters from him in DA Nang. We also have a letter frm LT COL. Charles Lower that states that he(my father-in-law) served 30 consecutive or 60 nonconsectve days in Vietnam or contiguous waters in support of Vietinam military operartions dated 3/21/1966. We submitted this to the VA and they said that doesn't prove he was in Vietinam. His records show Okinawa & Thailand only. Also since he had not been seen at a VA clinic for his cancer it is not in his records. My mother-in-law has retirement ins. thru her company so until Feb. of 2007 we never asked for help thru VA at that time we were checking on meds, they (VA) classified him a cat.8. We found that my-father-in-law had cancer 6 wks. prior to his death. You stated your father controlled all USAF in NAM for 70-71,Does he by chance know who might have done that during the 65-66 years. Also is it possible that some went without oders?

Ok, I sent you a Private Email. Please read that.

The letter from LTC Lower should have been sufficient if he was his commander or supervisor.

We'll talk more.

I am also in the process of trying to prove that I was boots on the ground at Da Nang enroute from a tdy assignment at Nakhon Phanom RTAFB, and that I was exposed to AO while at NKP. I have a document proving that AO was testd at unspecified bases in Thailand before it was ever dispersed over Viet Nam and Loas. It would certainly help if your mom in law could find just one of the letters your father wrote with Da Nang post mark. If he was Air Force I suspect that he had to fill out a travel voucher to process back in when he returned to his home base. It should reflect that he was at Da Nang.

I have only a copy of my travel voucher to prove I was in the country because apparently all remaining copies of the actual TDY order that assigned me to NKP was among tens of thosands of documents destroyed in a fire at the St. Louis NPRC during the 1980's.
