I was honorably discharged from the Navy in April 2003, as a 0000 Hospital Corpsman 3rd class. I've have been a stay at home mom since then, and am now seeking to return to working status as a medical assistant. I live in California and was told I needed to be an actual "Certifed Medical Assistant". Doesn't my HM completion equal that? And does anyone know of how I can a certified replacement for my original HM cerificate?
Google Registered or Certified Medical Assistant. Make sure you spell it correctly. There are 4 or 5 organizations that will certify you. After 26 years as a Corpsman, I got mine while teaching at a career college. I thought it was a low level worthless piece of paper but did it so I could sign off on my students application. As it turns out, I would not have been hired as a high school allied health teacher (my present job)if I did not have it. I certified through AMT. You can check them out at AMT1.com. I would be more concerned with your gap in employment. While explainable, you still weren't keeping up your skills which will be of concern to a future employer.
Your DD214 that shows HM0000 on it will work as the cert, the other thing I would do is get your Smart Transcript and the CANTRC for HM A school that shows the skills taught.
That is going to be your best bet. Another thing I would do is find your evals from any wards you worked on that have a job description.
Hope that helps, I was able to challenge the LPN license. When I moved back home to Washington, I was unable to get the license here. I instead got my RMA and my AMT certs.
HM certification does not allow you to challenge any LPN boards anymore that I am aware of. NLN requires formal nursing school training, and while 0000 is good training, its not anywhere near what lpn school is. as for cma, check their national website.

When I went thru A school (1980) I was told the nly civilain job I was qualified for was an EMT-A. None of it was transerable to a college or trade school. Check with your state Board of Health, Dept of Licenure. They can help you. Good Luck.
