Background: I've been enlisted for almost 10 months. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was about 7 after a really bad attack. I told my recruiter about the childhood asthma, he said since it was before the age of 12 it didn't count and to just not say anything. I've never had any really serious problems with it, got through bootcamp without failing a PFA. Haven't failed a PFA since then. I'm still in a student status because my school is so long but within the last month have had 5 or 6 asthma attacks randomly. Sometimes its while I'm PTing a few times while I was just sitting at my desk.
I went to medical, had a PFT done where they said my asthma was pretty bad. Had a follow up with my provider today and he starting talking about medically separating me for it.
Can he do that if I've been in for more than 6 months?
He said they don't want to send people out to ships if they're going to have attacks, which i completely understand but should I wait until I'm out there and have an attack, what if i don't have one. What if it's just my allergies affected my asthma.
Can I be separated for not telling them about the childhood asthma?
I'm freaking out, I've worked so hard to get to this point and to have it taken away from me like this is going to literally break my heart.
Can he do that if I've been in for more than 6 months?
Yes you can be medically separated (honorable) and possibly for fraudulent enlistment (other than honorable). You chose to not list your previous asmatha diagnosis, not your recruiter. YOU had multiple chances to report to the truth and YOU decided to withhold this information. YOU are lucky that you didn't have an attack during Bootcamp and die (it has happened). YOU will have to face the consequences of YOUR actions.
AND IF YOU DO CLAIM THE ASTHMA PROBLEM BUT ITS NOT SEVERE CAN YOU STILL ENLIST OR DO YOU GET DQ'ED
Depends on the age you were diagnosed, last attack, etc. Obtain copies of your records related to the asthma diagnosis and provide to your recruiter. He/she will submit to MEPS for evaluation and they will either DQ you, allow you to physical and then clear you or recommend a waiver. Better to be up front about it than have it come back and bite you later and end up with a fraudulent enlistment. I have processed close to 20 fraudulent enlistments this year alone for mental health issues.
