Hello,
I am currently in dep, and I have a friend who has PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). She really wants to join but dosn't know if it will disqualify her from the service. I said I would check it out for her so if anyone knows anything about it that would be awsome. |

Only MEPS can decide whether a medical condition is disqualifying, but PCOS can trigger other serious health problems. Offhand, I would say she's probably not suitable for military service.
Risks: Women with PCOS are at risk for the following: Endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterine lining) are possible, due to overaccumulation of uterine lining, and also lack of progesterone resulting in prolonged stimulation of uterine cells by estrogen. It is however unclear if this risk is directly due to the syndrome or from the associated obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperandrogenism. Insulin resistance/Type II diabetes High blood pressure Dyslipidemia (disorders of lipid metabolism — cholesterol and triglycerides) Cardiovascular disease Strokes Weight gain Miscarriage |

For those awaiting my results:
I finally got my answer. I have been trying to get back into the Army since August 2008. I am prior service. I have a college degree (4.0 GPA). But, I am also extremely honest. I did not try to hide my diagnosis of PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). Even though my PCOS is under control and I am not on any medication regiment for it; none of that matters. PCOS is a medical disqualifier. Tried for a waiver. Uh uh. I don't understand it, but it is what it is. I would think not being able to get pregnant would be a positive thing for the military (no babies, no baggage). I am saddened by this, as I was looking forward to re-joining the ranks. Good luck to all you future soldiers !!! You don't realize it yet, but, serving your country will be the highlight of your lives. |
