Does anyone know if the AF needs more 1A2's for C-17's or C-130's right now? I plan on putting all 17 bases on my dream sheet in BLM, seems like they would need a lot of people on them because I heard the AF wants a lot more of the 17s.

Old thread but I have a related question.
I'm going in as a 1A2 and leave for BMT (AD)in 10 days. Not that I'll actually be able to pick, but I'm still trying to decide whether to list 17's or 130's as my first choice.
Besides the obvious airframe differences themselves, what are the pros and cons of each as far as travel and base options? I'm young and single so traveling is good. And, I guess both will travel plenty. But, I hear the base options are more limited with 17's. Is this true?
I was at an air show recently and spoke with loads on both planes and, of course, they said theirs was the best. But, I didn't get a chance to find out about the where I might likely get initially based at for each. I know, "needs of the Air Force" and all but do many people get one of their top choices? If I knew I could get Europe or ***an right out of tech school I would be a happy camper.
I posted that thread forever ago, right after basic. I am now a C-5 load and loving it! Anyway, when I was there, they told us that C-5's were manned at about 115%, C-17's were at 110%, and 130's were mannned at 93% or something...so basically they told us not to expect C-5 orders at all and very few 17 orders. I put C-5s first, and that's what I got...and I know a lot of guys who got 17s as well. That wasn't always the case, some guys who didn't want them ended up with 130s but the moral of the story is if you want it ask for it. As for asking for 130's, you will definitely get them. From what I understand it's tough to get Ramstein or Japan, but I knew 2 guys that went to 130's and one went to each. As for travel, C-5's see some cool stuff and get more time where they go because they always break. On the other hand, 17's go cooler places but break a lot less, and they deploy once in awhile but not often. 130's as far as I know pretty much do nothing but fly around the flag pole and deploy all the time. Hope that helps. No matter what plane you get, know that loadmaster as a first term airman is about as good as it gets! Work hard and study in tech school and you'll have a good time no matter where you end up...aircrew is the place to be.
