Is there a central site I coudl go to for information on it? Where are the good bases to fly out of (Hickam is a good one)? How reliable are they for return trips?? Any other information would be helpful, thanks.
Hickam can be a crapshoot for return trips...you gotta be careful, and you need to be sure you have a backup plan and can afford to fly back commercial.
Getting TO Hickam is easy as pie. I live near Travis, and it's almost a sure thing you will get a hop in a matter of days after you get there, if not the day of (we should all be so lucky, eh?)
Do not ever count on space A as a means of travel. Yes, it's there as a purpose to travel, but never rely on it. Make sure you always have enough money for a plane ticket because most passenger terminals close certian hours now a days...
Experiance? - 7 years Air Trans, 6 year Passenger Terminal experiance, 3 Space A trips.
According to the AMC website you should contact your local terminal for the most accurate information. Here's some GENERAL information they give which includes contact information for those local terminals.
I am done space A plenty of times, but I am a retiree and have plenty of time on my hands. That is a big factor as active duty must be on leave. Also have plenty of money as most terminals close at night and you could wind up spending more money on ground transportation and lodging than it would cost you for a commercial ticket.
