I was an IT2 with a system adminstrator cert and i dont know what positions i should apply for rank-wise. i figure GS-15 is definitly too high so what and how can i find out what my job translates to?

Try GS-5/GS-7 without a degree.

I am not sure what they will give you in terms of credit for service. I know that in the DC area, they are desperate for IT people - my son was with the BLS and is now with USGS (Labor and Interior). There is a salary differential for IT people that pays more than the same jobs for his position - Economist. Of course you need a degree for his job.

With a BA/BS you would get GS-7 and most people who do a good job advance yearly to the max level of their job.
