Captain Holderman was the Comapny Commander of K Company 307th Infantry. His company hooked up with the 308th Infantry's "Lost Battalion" when both were cut off. Holderman was wounded on three of the five days they were surrounded and walked around with a piece of wood sticking out of his shoulder the whole time. He was probably the most decorated soldier in World War I.

THERE ARE DIFFERENT WAYS USED TO DESCRIBE 'THE MOST DECORATED US SOLDIER' OF ANY CONFLICT. DO YOU JUST COUNT U.S. AWARDS, OR A TOTAL OF ALL AWARDS AND DECORATIONS, U.S. AND FOREIGN? I AM A FORMER ARMY CLERK (AWARDS & DECORATIONS) AND A HISTORIAN AND AUTHOR. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH, I AM CONVINCED COLONEL WILLIAM J. DONOVAN OF BUFFALO NY WAS THE MOST DECORATED US SOLDIER OF WW ONE. HE RECIVED EVERY MEDAL THE US AWARDED AT THAT TIME (MEDAL OF HONOR, CONSPICUOUS SERVICE CROSS, CONSPICUOUS SERVICE MEDAL AS WELL AS PURPLE HEART (LATER). ADDITIONALLY, FOREIGN AWARDS TOO NUMEROUS TO MENTION. IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, CHECK OUT THE TWO PAGES OF DONOVANS AWARDS LISTED IN AUTHOR ANTHONY CAVE BROWN'S BOOK: "THE LAST HERO - WILD BILL DONOVAN. HE ALSO SERVED IN WW TWO, FOUNDING THE OSS (OFFICE OF STRATEGIC SERVICES), FORERUNNER OF THE CIA. HE IS (TO DATE) THE ONLY PERSON IN US HISTORY TO RECEIVE THE TOP FOUR MEDALS THIS COUNTRY AWARDS FOR GALLANTRY ON THE BATTLEFIELD AND PUBLIC SERVICE (THE NATIONAL SECURITY MEDAL). NOTEWORTHY ALSO IS THE FACT THAT THIS MONTH (APRIL) MARKS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE PARIS CONFERENCE IN 1919 FORMING THE AMERICAN LEGION, OF WHICH DONOVAN WAS A FOUNDING FATHER. ANOTHER NATIVE BUFFALONIAN WAS, I BELIEVE, THE MOST DECORATED US SOLDIER OF WORLD WAR TWO. COL MATT URBAN, NOT AUDIE MURPHY. NOT TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM MURPHY, BUT IF YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT ww TWO SERVICE ITSELF, THE PERIOD OFFICIALLY BEGAN DEC 7, 1941, AND ENDED MARCH 1946. DURING THAT TIME, COL URBAN RECEIVED MORE MEDALS (PERSONAL DECORATIONS) THAN MURPHY. MANY (MOST)OF THE MURPHY WEBSITES LIST MEDALS HE RECEIVED YEARS AFTER THE WAR'S END, INCLUDING NUMEROUS MEDALS THAT WERE NOT EVEN IN EXISTENCE DURING THE WAR YEARS, AS HE CONTINUED HIS MILITARY SERVICE AFTER THE WAR IN THE TEXAS NATIONAL GUARD. COL URBAN DID NOT CONTINUE MILITARY SERVICE AFTER WAR'S END. WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT THE TWO WORLD WARS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY HAVE TWO NATIVE BUFFALONIANS AS THE MOST DECORATED US SOLDIERS OF THOSE WARS?
