My name is Erin. I am 19 years old and I am seriously considering joining the National Guard. While I do want to serve my country, I still have a family I need to support at home, so money is a issue for me.
All I want to know is can you make a good living off being in the Guard? The last thing I would want is to come home to my girl with a job that only has me work two weekends a month and generates little income.
You could... um... get another job? I work full time, all the Guard does is make you drill 1 weekend/month. On top of the money I get from working full time, i get 200 dollars for drill and 700 dollars for attending classes... which the Army paid for.
yeah you're going to make very, very little off just being in the guard. if anything, you should think of it as some extra pocket change.
AGR positions are available (ask a recruiter what that is). i hear they are often hard to come by though.
long and the short of it though is you need a day job. you should also expect to be deployed, so i hope you have someone else who can take care of your child in the event that you get called up.
Hello Erin. I'm a full time technician in the TNANG. I have been a technician for the past 10 years. I don not no which Guard family you are joining. The AirNG will require you to do 24-30 days ojt. This can be expanded by asking if you could make up the drill weekends that you missed while you were in basic and school. You can also try to add on you two weeks of training on top of that. If you are able to impress everybody you coome in contact with when a job opens up you will have a better than average chance of qualifying for it. Just don't limit yourself to one job apply for everything, both technician and agr. Try looking on this webv site Fulltimeguard.com. It lists all Air an Army technician and Agr jobs within the United States and her territories. Good Luck
Whats up Erin? Im a recruiter in the ILARNG and we have lots of full time job opportunities just like any other NG has. If you are looking to make a living in the guard do so. But think wisely before just going active. I know lots of people that love it but i know some that dont. Ask your guard recruiter about the Active First Program. You can be in the Guard and go Active duty for 30, 38, or 48 months. After that you come back to the Guard and you are entitled to all the bonuses that both branches have to offer. Ask lots of questions before you make a decision. Need some advice 217-220-3823 I will square you away. Good luck
i just enliasted recenlty and know that the guard will be a great accomplishment in my life and know that the college money alone, will be a great asset to my future, if i can have free money to go to college and be a nurse like i had started doing before enlisting, then i would love to move up in ranks and do something in the medical/healthcare field in the guard. i just know the college money alone will help me make a great living for myself. if you decide to do the guard you would be making a great decision. good luck with making your decisions. God Bless PVT. S
