This is news to me. In the Guard and Reserve unless you are AGR (Active Duty Guard or Reserve) you can retire once you have 20 years time in service, however you don't get retirement pay until you turn age 60. There has been talk for many years of that age dropping to 55 but as far as I know its still age 60. I doubt it will change to age 55 any time soon due to the loss of soldiers at age 55. The Guard and Reserves are having a hard time keeping strength levels up right now and they cant afford to loose soldiers between the ages of 55 and 60.

It looks like the legislation is still in committee...last action date looks like 2003...so it probably died in committee.

It Looks like mostly Democrat sponsors. I Remember my republican congresswomen sending me a letter stating she wouldn't support it. Check for yourself see attached link

As far as I know age is still 60, but what I would like to know is about pay. Read that if you have 40 years of service you can get 100% of basic monthly pay. Saw this in Military.com can anyone confirm?

Guard and Reserve retirement is based on 3 things:

1. Time in service, the longer time in service you have the more money you get.

2. Rank, The more rank you have the more money you get.

3. The most important factor in how much money you will get when you retire is retirement points. You get 1 retirement point for every day of active duty and correspondence courses add to retirement points. So if you have several years of active duty service you get more when you retire than someone who never served on active duty with the same amount on time in service. Also if you have deployed or did and short tours then it adds to what you will get when you retire.

Go to the U.S. Army Human Resources Command website at www.hrc.army.mil. Sign in with your AKO information, go to the retirement section and you can find out information on earning points for retirement. It also has a handy calculator that can give you an idea of what your monthly check will be.

As far as I know, retirement age is 60 YOA. There were several "attempts" to change retirement to 55 but, snafu in Congressional sub committees. Unless Clinton or Obama makes it election issue(s), to entice more voters. I seriously doubt it! Keep on eye, bill watch!

Wrong O, old chap. In the Army National Guard one can retire after 20 good years of service, a year earning 50 or more retirement points. Then, you get to start drawing your retirement pay, set at a price per point, at age 60. For instance... I retired with about 2700 points, rank of CPT (0.375 dollars per point). So, 2700 X 0.375 = 1012.5 dollars per month at the current rate. I retired into the Retired Reserve which allows me the raises each year until I reach age 60. My estimated pay will be around 16-1700 a month... at age 60

GUARD/RESERVE RETIREMENT IS AGE 20 YEARS, PAY IS RECIEVED AT AGE 60, AT THIS TIME. THERE ARE SEVERAL BILLS PROPOSAL IN CONGRESS TO LOWER THE AGE TO 55. BUT IT IS AS SOMEONE ELSE STATED, IT SEEMS THAT REPUBLICANS ARE AGAINST THIS ! THEY (REPUBLICIANS) HAVE NO PROBLEM SENDING SOLDIERS TO WAR, BUT WHEN IT COMES TO BENEFITS THEY DRAG THEIR FEET. OUR AS DONALD RUMSFIELD ONCE STATED " GO TO WAR WITH WHAT YOU HAVE" I GUESS THAT MEANS IF THE BENNIES SUCK, LET THEM STAY THAT WAY. THIS IS FROM A RESERVE RETIREE OF VIETAM, DESERT STORM/SHIELD, ENDURING FREEDOM THAT HAD TO WAIT 5 YEARS FOR A VA DISABILITY CLAIM TO WORK ITS WAY THRU THE RED TAPE. SO DON'T WHOLE YOUR BREATH WAITING FOR THE AGE REDUCTION. BETTER TO LITE A FIRE UNDER YOUR POLITICAL REP.

OK,
I am looking to get more support for the National Guard and Reserve Retirement Modernization Act which is Senate Bill 643 and HR: 1428.
These bill propose to lower the Retirement Age for National Guard and Reserve Soldiers who have been called up after Sep 11, 2001. It will reduce the retirement age from age 60 by 23 months for every 90 days of active duty service. If you support this bill go to the military.com home page click on the benefits link, then click on the Legislative link. This will take you to a page where you can contact your Representatives and Senators asking them to get off thier butts and move on this piece of important legistlation. We will not get it approved unless more Guardsmen and Reservists start calling and writing their delegates. Anyone who has at least 10 years of military service needs to support this.

I retired from the ANG July 7, 2008 when I turned 60. I stayed in when I turned 55 because I thought it would be nice to collect drill pay one month followed by retirement pay the next. 60 YOA is still the official age to collect retirement pay but once you serve a total of 20 good years in the Guard, you can retire. However, you will not collect pay until age 60. I served 38 years 8 months 19 days total time and retired as a CMSgt (E-9). I spent most of my guard time in what is called Combat Communications, which I really enjoyed. I work in computers for my civilian career and the DoD got the great idea of using civlian experience to staff a new computer security mission in 1998. I was transfered to that mission and really enjoyed the work, doing considerable active duty following 911. I would have stayed in longer if I could have because I beleived in the mission. However I was forced out due to my age.
