My son joined the ARNG Jan, 2009, at end of sophmore year as member of the ROTC program at the college he attends in FL. The recruiter knew he joined with his intention to particpate in the SMP program upon return from and completion of Basic/AIT. He wanted to experience what enlisted will experience and brush up on topics he may have not done so well in his ROTC program. His MOS first had him to be part of a critical unit upon completion of Basic/AIT, then his MOS was changed to remove him from the critial unit and place him in another unit so that he could participate in the SMP program and not be deployed so he could complete college and become commissioned. He was told that Congress took away his enlistment bonus. Is this true? Does he not get any bonus prior to his participation in the SMP program?
