I'm currently investigating which reserve force is best suited for me. While meeting with the ANG recruiter he insisted that deployment in the ANG was strictly on a voluntary basis. This seems out of line with other forces and I wanted to get some legit feedback. Thanks in advance.

"Strictly Voluntary" is false information given by your recruiter. This will depend on your unit. For instance, I'm in an ANG Weather Flight. When the invasion of Iraq kicked off, we had 2 folks sent to Kuwait to roll in with the 1st wave of Army... The was involuntary. We also had 2 folks sent to backfill at a couple of Army support Weather flights CONUS. Now, I volunteered for a 6 month deployment almost 2 years ago. We have a Red Horse squadron in our state that has had many volunteer and non-volunteer deployments to war areas and other places for humanitarian relief also. Your best bet is to inquire with the particular units that have the AFSC's you are considering and ask them directly. Fighter squadrons deploy as well!! But we all are ALL sunject to involuntary mobilization at a moments notice... This applies to probably 99% of all US military reservists/guardsmen!!!
So keep all this in mind before you sign. It's not fair to other members if you come in for the benefits but are unwilling to do the work whether it's in a war zone or stateside support. Good luck on your decision.
No wonder why same soldier deployments are up! they tell the new recruits they don't have to go anywhere ...no wonder the Guard is reaching its recruiting goals... LOL-
Nah but serious- a1cfox21 is right some units i think are voluntary... but believe me if they wanted you to deploy they'd find a way...
For a ANG recruiter TO insisted that deployments in the ANG was strictly on a voluntary basis is BS... get him infront of somebody and have him tell you that BS... unless said recruiter is getting you into his unit that doesn't deploy..
Awesome. Thanks for the feedback! While I'm not opposed to deploying, I really want to make the most of this experience and avoid BS if I can. BTW it's for the 163rd reconnaissance wing out of March ARB so anyone that has input it is much appreciated. Took the ASVAB today and scored an 83 woot! On my way!
