I am a prior service ROTC cadet, and am set to commission in the Indiana National Guard next month. The 1LT who has been doing my paperwork told me I am not getting the $10,000 commissioning bonus because Congress took away a lot of money from the military and only a few critical AOC's are getting it now (I am 70B). Does anyone know a state that is offering the bonus still? I am really peeved because this was promised to me as a SMP cadet and now a month before I commission they are telling me I am not getting it.

Individual states don't control federal level bonuses, NGB does. Therefore you will find the same commissioning bonus offerings in every state/territory.
Good luck; cul8r.

Indiana must be pulling my leg then because I have talked with two officer strength managers from different states, and they have the bonus for my AOC.

As always bonuses are subject to change, but as you've correctly identified you are still elgible for the bonus....once you complete BOLC II and III. So get those knocked out and submit your 1059 (School completion form to the state bonus control manager), and within 2-4 weeks you should be receiving that bonus.

One thing you will learn from the military is that the first answer isn't always true. Although Officers shouldn't give you bogus answers, they sometimes get passed along and interpreted in different ways. Always do your research. You got a Major telling you what to do and that your good to go. Early congrats Cadet. Getting that butter Bar was a huge time in my life. I still remember coming back on a plane from the last phase at Fort Lewis and all of us Candidates (OCS) holding that butter bar as we spoke to each other on the plane.

Here's a link to the current ARNG Officer Accession Bonus guidance: http://www.virtualarmory.com/sms/library/SMOM%2009-084%...rmation%20Papers.pdf
Go to page 2 of the memo that appears then click on the Encl #3 link. This link is contained the the Virtual Armory web site which means you will have to register in order to get in.
Good luck; cul8r.

My son has a similar situation, that perhaps can be clarified as well. He joined the ARNG Jan, 2009, at end of sophmore year as member of the ROTC program at the college he attends in FL. The recruiter knew he joined with his intention to particpate in the SMP program upon return from and completion of Basic/AIT. He wanted to experience what enlisted will experience and brush up on topics he may have not done so well in his ROTC program. His MOS first had him to be part of a critical unit upon completion of Basic/AIT, then his MOS was changed to remove him from the critial unit and place him in another unit so that he could participate in the SMP program and not be deployed so he could complete college and become commissioned. He was told that Congress took away his enlistment bonus. Is this true? Does he not get any bonus prior to his participation in the SMP program?
